As winter draws near, many of the cold-blooded animals hibernate till spring comes. And everybody knows they will be awake months later, crawling and walking around and looking for food.
But do you also know that some animals go to a summer sleep, which is called aestivation? Most animals are active during the summer, singing and dancing freely. The aestivation animals, however, will have a long sleep in a cool place to stay away from the dry and hot summer days.
In Southeast Africa there is a kind of porcupine (豪猪). Its body is covered with sharp stings. This creature usually eats earthworms as its main food. As the hot days come, the earthworms go deep under the mud to keep themselves alive. During this time the porcupine can’t find any to live on, so it lies down to aestivate for months without eating. It comes out again when the cool autumn days arrive.
An unusual kind of tree frog in South Africa will climb up a tree during the summer. Here it hides itself in a cool place to have its summer sleep.
The most interesting thing about the aestivating animal is that while it sleeps, its body temperature drops just as the hibernating animal’s body temperature drops in winter.
43. Why do porcupines aestivate?
A. Because they are not active animals.
B. Because the weather is too hot and dry.
C. Because they have nothing to eat during the summer.
D. Because their body temperature is not high enough.
44. When does the porcupine start and end its aestivation?
A. It starts in January and ends in March.
B. It starts in March and ends in April.
C. It starts in August and ends in October.
D. It starts in November and ends in February the next year.
45. Which of the following is NOT true?
A. Hibernating animals are active in summer.
B. Porcupines in Southeast Africa live mainly on earthworms.
C. One kind of tree frogs in South Africa sleeps inside trees in summer.
D. The body temperature of an aestivation animal in summer is as low as that in winter.
46. What does the underlined word “hibernate” mean in Chinese?
A. 觅食 B. 冬眠 C. 蜗居 D. 隐藏

A few weeks ago, I went into Chase’s class for help. I e-mailed Chase’s teacher one evening and said, “My son keeps telling me that the thing you’re sending home is Maths — but I’m not sure whether I shouldbelieve him. Help, please.” She e-mailed right back and said, “No problem! I can help Chase after school anytime.” And I said, “No, not him. Me. He gets it. Help me.”
And that’s why I stayed with Chase’s Maths teacher. We talked about teaching children. We agreed that subjects like Maths and reading are not the most important things that are learned in a classroom. We also talked about something else — kindness and bravery.
And then she told me this.
Every Friday afternoon Chase’s teacher asks her students to take out a piece of paper and write down the names of four children with whom they’d like to sit the following week. She also asks the students to nominate (推荐) one student who they think is the most popular student that week. They needn’t write down their names on the paper.
After the students go home, she takes out those pieces of paper, and studies them.
In fact, Chase’s teacher is not looking for a new seating chart (表) or “popular students”. She is looking for lonely (孤独的) children. She’s looking for the ones who are unwilling to talk with others. She is finding out whose gifts (天赋) are not noticed by their classmates. Then she gets to know who needs help.
After watching Columbine the wise woman knew that all violence (暴力) comes from loneliness. So she decided to start fighting violence early and often, and what she is doing is SAVING LIVES.
And she finds the lonely kids from those lists and tries to help them. It’s Maths to her. All is love — even Maths.
47. Why does Chase’s teacher ask her students to write down some names on paper?
A. Because she wants to find the lonely children.
B. Because she is looking for a new seating chart.
C. Because she is looking for the popular student.
D. Because she wants to help her students learn Maths.
48. Which of the following is the correct order?
a. Chase’s teacher asks her students write down some names they want to sit with.
b. Chase’s teacher learns from the TV violence comes from loneliness.
c. Chase’s parent emails the teacher for help.
d. Chase’s teacher studies the lists after school.
e. Chase’s teacher finds who needs help.
A. c-a-d-e-b B. b-a-c-e-d C. b-a-d-e-c D. a-b-d-c-e
49. What do you know about the teacher?
A. She’s a good mother. B. She’s kind and full of love.
C. She’s good at teaching Maths. D. She’s ready to help the parents.
50. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Looking for Help B. Learning Maths
C. Teaching Children D. Looking for the Lonely

I was telling my boy Sonny the story of the hare and the tortoise (乌龟). At the end I said, “Son, remember: Be slow and steady (镇定的), and that will win the race. Don’t you think there’s something to learn from the tortoise?”
Sonny opened his eyes wide, “Do you mean next time when I’m entering for the 60-metre race, I should wish that Billy, Tony and Sandy would all fall asleep halfway?”
I was surprised, “But the tortoise didn’t wish that the hare would fall asleep!”
“He must have wished that,” Sonny said, “Otherwise how could he be so foolish as to race with the hare? He knew very well the hare ran a hundred times faster than he himself did.”
“He didn’t have such a wish,” I insisted (坚持). “He won the race by perseverance (坚忍不拔), by pushing on steadily.”
Sonny thought a while. “That’s a lie,” he said. “He won it because he was lucky. If the hare hadn’t happened to fall asleep, the tortoise would never have won the race. He could be as steady as you like, or a hundred times steadier, but he’d never have won the race. That’s for sure.”
I gave up. Today’s children are not like what we used to be. They’re just hopeless.
66. Who were Billy, Tony and Sandy?

67. What did Sonny think of the tortoise’ winning the race?
▲
68. Do you agree with Sonny? Why or why not?

I’m very glad to share with you mystory of DIY.
I learned how to make a fruit salad in the school DIY Club. Last weekend I made one myself. First I got everything ready, like a spoon, a bowl, some plates, some salad cream and some fresh fruit. Next I chose my favourite fruit and wash it. Then I cut some of the large fruit into small pieces. Finally, I mixed them together. Of course I added some salad cream to make it taste better. DIY is really great fun.

Like many other villages near towns or cities, Lofton is clean and quiet. But in some ways, it is a little different. Many people usually take the train to work in a big city called Manchester, but their homes are in Lofton. There most people usually work at most four days a week. They are friendly and helpful. No one worries about anything. They are healthy and seldom ill.
Life in Lofton may not be so exciting as that in large cities. People have to go to Manchester if they want to see a film or listen to a concert. However, I believe you can forget all your problems there. That’s why so many tourists go there every year.

It was not a good day for Maya. Everything was going wrong. First, she woke up late and didn’t have time to eat breakfast. And when she packed her schoolbag, she couldn’t find her ruler.
“Let me help you,” said her brother, Abdul. He found her ruler on the floor. “Let’s run to the bus stop,” he said. “We’ll just make it.”
But she forgot to bring her homework and the teacher was unhappy about that. The teacher gave her writing homework to do the next day. On the way home, it started to rain. She dropped her books on the ground as she got off the bus.
Abdul got off the bus just behind her. “Don’t worry,” he said.” If we take them home and dry them quickly, they will be all right.”
“Thanks, Abdul,” said Maya.
That night Maya sat down to do her homework. But when she read the topic of the writing homework, she smiled. The teacher had written at the top of the page, “Write about your best friend. Tell us what you like best about him or her.” She thought for a while and started to write, “The best thing about my brother Abdul …” 下载本文
