That is the end of Part One. You now have 20 seconds to copy your answer onto your answer sheet.
Now turn to Part Two. Questions 9 to 13. You will hear five people talking about their opinions on homework. For questions 9 to 13, choose from the list A to F what each speaker says about homework. Use the letters only once. There is one extra letter you do not need to use.
Speaker 1:
I think that homework is necessary to reinforce what is learned in school. So I asked my students to memorize what was discussed in class through homework. At the same time, I hope my students could form work habits. You know some kids simply play computer games or watch TV after going back home. (E) Doing homework at least gives them a chance to form work habits.
Speaker 2:
As many as 5 or 6 hours of homework at night are not uncommon for us, leaving us little time to do much else. Assigned homework in almost every class, we have acquired a heavy load of work by the end of the day. However, if a plan were installed in the high schools that allowed each teacher to give each of his or her class a maximum of 3 hours of homework per week,(F) we could have more time to develop ourselves in other areas and a chance to live more balanced lives.
Speaker 3:
I get twins at Lofgit Elementary School. I really don’t like the fact that third-grade students in elementary schools are asked to write about 25 book summaries a year. They do the same thing over and over (A)without really getting into alternative ways of thinking about books and thinking about reading and writing.
Speaker 4:
I think the point of homework is to cover material the class didn’t have time to get to. So homework is to let students learn additional things. Besides I believe homework is necessary (B) because it’s the best way for parents to learn what their children do in school.
Speaker 5:
Many students struggle to keep relationships with family and friends strong. Studies show American families in general do not spend enough time together and homework significantly cuts down on the time that students can spend with their families. If a three-hour plan were installed, however,(D) students would be able to have more time with their families, which might help keep the relationships strong. As well as more family time, students would also be able to spend more time with friends, which is important in keeping emotional health in balance.

Now turn to Part Three. Questions 14 to 23. Look at the ten statements for this part. You will hear a passage talking about the automobile in American life. Decide whether you think each of the statements is Right, Wrong or Not Mentioned. Mark your answers on the answer sheet.
The private automobile has long played an important role in the United States. In fact, it has become a necessary and important part of the American way of life. (14)In 1986, 69% of American families owned at least one car, and 38% had more than one. By giving workers rapid and convenient transportation, (15)the automobile has freed them from having to live near their workplaces. (17) This has encouraged the growth of suburbs, but it has also led to the traffic problems in the city. (16)In addition, the automobile has contributed to the weakening of neighborhood ties by making it easy to keep up friendships at a distance, and to enjoy leisure activities far from home.(18) Family life has been affected in various ways. The car helps to keep families together, when it is used for picnics, outings, camping trips and other shared experiences. However, when teenage children have the use of the car or own one, their parents can’t keep an eye on them.(19) If they are immature, they sometimes become involved in situations that lead to serious trouble. There is even greater danger of the driver. Young or old has been drinking alcohol or taking drugs or(20) showing off by speeding or breaking other traffic laws. (21)Mothers of victims of such accidents have formed an organization called “Madd”: mothers are against drunk driving. These women want to prevent further tragedies. (22)They have worked to encourage the government to establish and enforce a national minimum drinking age. They sent speakers to schools and to meetings of citizens to impress people with the importance of careful and responsible driving. (23)For many Americans, the automobile is a necessity as well as a convenience. But for some it is also a mark of social status and an important middle-class symbol, and for young people, a sign of becoming an adult. All together cars mean very much to Americans.

Now turn to Part Four. Questions 24 to 30. Look at the questions for this part. You will hear about Ted Shred and his love story. For questions 24 to 30, indicate which of the alternatives A, B or C is the most appropriate response. Mark one letter A, B or C on the answer sheet.
Ted Shred doesn’t like cars. He wants people to stop driving, (24)because cars make the air dirty. Ted had an idea. He said:” I’m going to cycle around North America. (25)I want to show everyone that cycling is a fun way to get around. If more people ride bikes, the air will be cleaner.” He left his hometown with 160 dollars in his pocket. When he got to San Diego, he met another cyclist. The cyclist invited Ted to speak at a big meeting about the environment. He said (26) “ We’ll pay your airfare to Texas, and we’ll pay you to talk about your cycling trip.” Two hours later, Ted was on a plane to the environmental conference (27)and to a surprise. While he was at the conference, he met Deanna. It was love at first sight. They talked for six hours straight. The next day Ted called Deanna and asked her to finish the trip with him. Deanna said yes, sold everything in her apartment, (28)gave her notice at work and was on the road with Ted 20 days later. “(29B)It was difficult at first,” said Deanna, “(29A)Ted got up every morning at 6 a.m., but I wanted to sleep until noon.” After a few days, they started having fun. As they cycled from Florida to Montreal, and then back to Vancouver, every day was an adventure. (29C)People paid for their food in restaurants, and gave them extra money. Some people gave them 50 dollars or 100 dollars. They slept in people’s backyards and drank beer with motorcycle gans. On their way back to Vancouver, they stopped in Edmonton to visit Ted’s relatives. (30)During the stop over, they got married. People tied a “Just Married” sign and tin cans to the backs of their bikes. They now want to write a book about their trip. “We want people to know that you can be an environmentalist and still have fun.” Shred said.
