口译笔记技巧(三)
Unit Objective (单元目标) After reading this unit you should ☆ understand the characteristics of stenography for interpretation. ☆ find the difference between stenography and classroom noting or dictation ☆ master the principles of stenography
Warm-up (准备) 1. Two students are ordered to sit at the Interpreting Desk or Booth, acting as interpreters of the class. Their performance is evaluated and graded by instructor. 2. One or Two students are asked to present a piece of news or a weather forecast of the week.
Theory of Interpretation (口译理论) 口译笔记的要义: 分析内容、暗记要点; 注意框架、理解细节; 把握深层结构、做到“准、顺、快”。
Memoria Technica (记忆法) Listen to the following passage, and try to catch the key words and details, then retell them in your own words:

The University Logo The innovative idea of the logo stems from the beautiful scenery of Lishui which is a remarkable place fostering celebrity. // Water, which is the origin of everything, indicates the vast breadth of mind and great tolerance of the university, and represents the notion that those who could be tolerant could be great. It implies that Lishui University is a comprehensive university with multiple schools and programs, and a palace for learning and training.// Water, which originates far away and runs long distance, stands for the long history of the university and her humanist culture.// Water, which runs forever, stands for the openness, modern educational concept of the university, and for the spirit of promotion and innovation.//
Stenography (口译笔记) Read the first part of Unit 6 of your Textbook, to understand the importance of stenography, its characteristics, functions and principles for interpreting.
A. Read the First part, “Reading Prelude” of Unit 6 of the textbook. B. Study Stenography : Common Abbreviations for Stenography (see Attachment).
例举: Canada and the United States have a very similar culture because they share a similar history. Both countries were settled by people from Europe who came to North America looking for a new life. Canadians and Americans both developed an individual-oriented culture because this was needed to survive in a huge new land.

C. Stenographic practice on the second part, “Exercises” of Unit 4 of the textbook..
Cultural Salon or Seminar (文化沙龙或研讨会)
In the last 10 minutes will be a cultural salon or seminar. Two or three students who have been asked to prepare a speech in advance on a given topic. Students will do the oral interpretation.

Homework Assignments (课后作业)
Work on Exercise 3 in Unit 4 of the Textbook: Information Industry: Engine of Economic Growth
Task 1: Listen to the article and then start interpreting at the end of each segment.
Task 2: Use the signs of Stenography learnt in this class to take notes while reading the article.
