Passage 1
During the last two years, I’ve had a handful of clients who have shown up looking for some coaching who you and I would consider incredibly successful. They seem to have it all --- the money, the position, the prestige and the power.
Take John for example. He spent more than 15 years building an amazing business. For years, he worked day and night to build his team, drive profitability and master his craft. John is the type of business owner who is always taking new training so he can be an innovator in his field. He reads all the right books, does all the right things and he puts all the great ideas into action. If you were going to build an extremely profitable service business, you’d definitely want to copy what he’s done.
But when John showed up in my life, he wasn’t very happy. On the one hand, he knew he had to change. On the other hand, he didn’t want to give up all that he had built. He had everything he wanted and still wasn’t satisfied. That’s because our society is addicted to fame and fortune. You believe that having money and prestige will make you happy. You become obsessed with the 30-year-old entrepreneurs who are making a killing (大走财运) in Silicon Valley. You watch rags to riches stories and wonder why you’re not making more money so you too can travel the world on a yacht. You then give up your life to work one more hour to become even more successful.
What John was really seeking is what I call “Beyond Success.” He had all the success in the world---defined by what society believes success is in terms of money, prestige and power. But his life needed something else. It doesn’t mean I tell my clients to give their money away and rush to the woods to live a simple life. What it does mean is I coach them to redesign their lives to feel passionate and fulfilled again. What may surprise you is most of them stay in the same career, while they just learn to live a new way.
Some find meaning in spiritual endeavors (努力). Others find meaning in the family and friends they lost touch with on their way to success. Many clients find the answers they want by turning their attention away from themselves and into other people. The solution is different for every client, but they all learn to release themselves from believing that fame and fortune equal happiness.
It’s time for you to give up your addiction to fame and fortune. Having money or being famous will not make you happy. Once the initial excitement goes away, you’ll still be left looking at yourself in the mirror and wondering, “Is this all there is?”

Passage 2
Everyone struggles with sadness, disillusionment (幻灭), and addictions. The public struggles of famous people may make them less happy than normal people. Models, musicians and star athletes, especially the movie stars may actually be prone to more unhappiness and even despair than regular people. For instance, Kate Moss was addicted to cocaine. Marilyn Monroe, blonde movie star, was severely depressed before she committed suicide. These examples make movie star happiness seem hard to achieve and we have found the explanations from the following perspectives.
First of all, movie stars have no secrets. The public struggles of famous people include breakups, disappointments, and weaknesses. They are available for everyone to see, discuss and mock. People love reading about the gossip of the rich and famous; the more embarrassing, the better.
Secondly, movie stars’ sense of self could become lost. Famous people may lose touch with who they really are and what they really think and like. The media and fans have their own ideas about who a movie star is, which makes it difficult for the celebrity to remain grounded in his or her own self. And, sharing your opinions on national TV could make you vulnerable to a massive attack. That is why the public struggle of movie stars to determine a sense of self can make their happiness shaky.
Besides the above-mentioned reasons, another one is that it’s lonely at the top. Movie star happiness may be affected by the whole experience of reaching the pinnacle (顶点,顶峰) of success and realizing it’s not as fulfilling as you think. It’s like getting your first book published, or earning your first degree, or being on TV for the first time. At first it’s exhilarating (使人兴奋的), but then you eventually wonder, “Is this it? What else is there?”
Since movie star happiness is greatly influenced by the public, still there are numerous people who want to be famous. Fame no doubt has its benefits, but it could be a stressful existence. Movie star happiness is definitely not a guarantee. However, one person’s garbage is another’s treasure. If movie stars genuinely love entertaining, they may find the stress easier to take.
6.From the first paragraph, we know, comparing with the normal people, that the movie stars are
A.happier.
B.richer.
C.sadder.
D.more depressed.
7.By saying “they are available for everyone to see”, the author means that
A.Everyone’s happiness and despair is public.
B.Everyone could go to see the movie stars anytime.
C.The movies of these stars are available for everyone.
D.Movie stars don’t have their own privacy which they deserve.
8.As for the second reason, what does “remain grounded” (Paragraph 3) mean?
A.Staying on the ground.
B.Having the sense of oneself.
C.Being hurt at a massive attack.
D.Perceiving some celebrity oneself inaccurately.
9.According to the passage, which one of the following events would give you different feeling?
A.Reaching the pinnacle of the mountain.
B.Earning your first degree from the university.
C.Going through the troubles and difficulties.
D.Being on TV for the first time.
10.Which one of the following sentences has the similar meaning with “one person’s garbage is another’s treasure”?
A.One person’s stress is another’s oxygen.
B.One person’s fame is another’s fortune.
C.One person’s car is another’s bike.
D.One person’s book is another’s pen.
