Should college students be allowed to get married?

       There is no denying the fact that it is a hotly debated topic today whether college students should be allowed to get married. Some time ago, the ban was lifted by some universities on students getting married. To this people's attitudes differ sharply. Some hold the positive view. They say that most college students are adults and that it is a basic right for those who have reached the appropriate ages to get married. Besides, they argue that with their biological and emotional needs met, these students will study better. The ban on this means a severe violation of human rights.  

      Many others, however, hold the negative opposite view. They claim that the university or college is a place to study instead of a community to lead family life. Allowing college students to get married would adversely affect their study. For instance, they would spend too much time attending their family and love, unable to concentrate on their school work.

As far as I am concerned, Weighing the arguments of both sides, I believe that college students should not be allowed to get married. Though mostly adults, they are actually immature psychologically. Their wishes to get married are, more often than not, impulses. Besides, as students, they are not ready to support a family financially

Internet—A Two-edged Sword

Internet is playing an increasingly important role in people’s life. As a newborn information delivering system, the Internet has made seas of information available at our fingers’ tips. Besides, the Internet serves as the most convenient means for communication. Through the Internet, people can discuss various problems and make friends who share common views.

But just as a coin has two sides, Internet has its own drawbacks which should not be neglected. First, it costs an alarming amount of money to construct the system and the cost is very high to most Chinese consumers. Second, it is sometimes difficult for people to find the right information they are looking for since there is too much rubbish on the net. Finally, it is also difficult to prevent the net from the invasion of criminals.

Therefore, the Internet should be viewed as a two-edged sword, which presents us with both conveniences and troubles. But we should not give up eating for fear of choking. The best policy, as I see it, is to further develop the net and exert proper supervision over it so that it can benefit us in a better way.

Say No to Pirated Products 

There is no denying the fact that Piracy has become a grave problem with which this country is confronted. In many places we see people peddling pirated books or disks. Actually, piracy has become so widespread that it has severely hindered the development of the nation’s economy. 

      A number of factors account for the problem, but the following are the most critical ones. Firstly, pirated products are much cheaper than copyrighted ones, so they are very attractive to people, especially youngsters, who are not financially well-off. Secondly, with highly developed technology, it is not difficult to manufacture pirated products. 

Pirated products are harmful in many ways . For one thing , intellectual property rights are severely infringed upon. For another, pirated products are often of low quality, thus damaging the interest of buyers. 

In view of the seriousness of the problem, it is essential that laws and regulations be formulated and enforced to ban the manufacture and circulation of pirated products. Meanwhile, people should enhance their awareness of protecting intellectual property rights. With these measures taken, we have reasons for us to expect a brighter future.

Changes in the Ownership of Houses

        As can be seen from the chart, ownership of houses in Beijing has significantly changed in the 1990s. In 1990, 75 percent of the houses were state-owned. Five years later, the ratio of state-owned houses to private ones was 60 to 40. But from then on, the ownership changed dramatically and by the end of the century, 80 percent of houses were private.

       There might have been two main reasons. One of the reasons

was the policy of the government. In the 1990s, China carried on with its reform policy and the government called for privatization of the state-owned estate. But it took time for the reform to come into effect. But from 1995 on when people have recognized its significance, the reformation took bigger steps. Another reason was that the people were getting better off and they could afford buying their own houses.

       Such changes have had great impact on individuals as well as the society. On one hand, the individuals must save money to buy an apartment or to pay the mortgage. On the other hand, a heavy burden has been taken off the government so that it can take more effective measures to improve people's life.下载本文
