The Study of love in western culture on Forrest Gump

Abstract: Paper presents an idea about the love on Forrest Gump. In this age, people around the world always want to get everything that can profit themselves, but they don’t care about other people. That’s what we need love. It is because of love that we can live in the world, and we do need to love everyone around us and our life. This movie tells us an encouraging story about Gump, and shows us some significative principle, especially love. He loves his mother, and he loves Jenny all the time. He loves the army and he loves his colorful life. That’s the point we need to learn.

《阿甘正传》中有关爱在西方文化中作用的研究

摘要：本文给出了有关《阿甘正传》中有关爱的观点，在这个时代，世上的人们都想着得到自己想要的所有事情，却总是不关心周围其他人。这就是我们为什么需要爱。正是因为爱我们才活在这世界上，而且我们真的需要爱我们周围的人，爱我们的生活。这部电影告诉我们一个催人奋进的故事，教给我们许多生活的道理，尤其是爱。阿甘爱他的母亲，爱珍妮，爱他所在的和多彩的生活。这就是我们要学习的重点。

1.Introduction

In this term,    I chose a course named The Western Culture and Films Appreciating. I would say that it’s very lucky for me to get a chance to study in this class. In the past, I just study English by reading, writing or something like that. But I didn’t really know the cultural background of western countries. So I decided to join in this kind of course. And I really learned something indeed by listening to our teacher and appreciating some nice movies. For example, people of USA or England have their own faith, but Chinese people don’t really trust that. And I know something else such as the way they acting, the way they show their feelings and the way they express the love and so on.  So I could understand the English culture better and I was interested in this class little by little.

    In order to understand the western culture deeply, we have appreciated some famous movies like Prince of Egypt, American Beauty, Se7en, Dead Poets Society, Brave heart and Forrest Gump. To be honest, at the very beginning, I expect that they would be very boring and lengthy, but I was wrong, these movies were not only very interesting but also meaningful. So I can be aware of those special culture and customs of American and the British. Among these movies, the most impressive one was Forrest Gump, and Gump’s spirit really touched me profoundly. Next I will talk about the movie and the reflection of love in western culture.

2.It’s an encouraging story

What’s the best way to success? People always try to find the most important factor of success. Maybe we can find something helpful from this movie Forrest Gump.

Actually, this movie is a long story about an ‘ordinary’ man whose name is Forrest Gump. When he was a little boy, the doctor told his mother that Gump’s IQ is just 75, which means that he was almost a ‘fool’! But his mother didn’t give up on him, she taught his son how to be a strong and loving man.

‘Never let anybody tell you they are better than you, Forrest!’, ‘Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get’…his mother always encourage Gump like that. So he grow up without low self-esteem. He loved his mother, and he knew how much his mom paid for him. When he met Jenny on the first day of his school day, his life start to change. What’s more, he loved Jenny always and forever. When another boys made fun of him from time to time, he didn’t become weak, instead, he became a strong boy, a fast boy. Why?  Because of Jenny’s encourage. ’Run! Run! ’. It is Jenny’s words that gave Gump the power and courage to live with a brave heart. His mother’s love and his little ‘girlfriend’ Jenny’s love just like the sunshine coming through the dark clouds. 

When he became an adult, he chose to join in the army, to fight for American in the Vietnam War. During this couple years, he got along very well with his comrades because Gump was sincere and loyal, and what’s more, he loved this palace. But we all know that the war was cruel, in a mission, He tried his best to save his teammates but failed. At the end, he lost all his brothers but one---lieutenant Dan Taylor, who was prepared to die in the war. But Dan was injured seriously, because he lost his legs so he lost the passion of life. But Gump encouraged him in his own way, and they bought a shrimper together to achieve the last wish of his comrade Bubba. At the same time Dan rekindled the hope for life by getting over all the difficulties with Gump. Time goes by, their shrimping business goes better and better so they were getting rich increasingly. Even through, Gump still kept frugal in his life. He still wear his old shoes and old trousers, sitting on the bench and waiting for the bus. The end of the story was pretty nice, Gump had a smart child named Gump, too. Lieutenant Dan also found his true love. Life was full of hope! And love is everywhere.

3.The role of love

3.1 background

Now let’s talk about the culture of the United States. In the 1970s in USA, It seems like that the whole society was ‘sick’, people lost their passion to work, and the society was unstable, there were always some scandals coming out. For example, the Watergate scandal, it was one of history's most infamous political scandal. The president Nixon became the first and the only president who was forced to resign because of politic scandals. That’s why the society needed love. We need to love our job, and try our best to do it perfectly rather than destroy it by hook or by crook. 

3.2 love

Speak of love, we have to know some differences between western culture and Chinese culture. When Chinese people wanted to express their love, they prefer to say ‘like’ instead of ‘love’, and if they say it out they might feel embarrassed. Because Chinese people are implicit. But things are different in west countries such as American or England, we all know that western people are open, accordingly, they can express their really feelings like ‘love’ easily and without any embarrassing. So that’s the point, thinking about the movie, thinking about Gump, as a dump boy, he can barely know people’ feeling by watching your face or acting like we always do, so his mother always keep talking to Gump. He said: “Mama always had a way of explaining things so I could understand them” ”Remember what I told you, Forrest, you are no different than anybody else is”. You will find that sometimes it is better to show your love to those who you love. Maybe the only thing the kids need is just the words “I love you, my son”, but if you don’t say it out, he will never hear what he wanted. 

From this movie, we can see the indifferent between man and man. When Gump went to school at the first day, in the school bus, no one wanted to sit with Gump, because they don’t want to sit with a fool. But Jenny invited him to sit down. So that Gump said:” I had never seen anything so beautiful in my life, she was like an angel”. There is no doubt that people lost their trust and love in each other during that time. What if they show a little love to the strangers or someone who need help? If they do, things will be different, and the world will be more harmonious. 

4.Conclusion  

   Love is one of the most precious emotions of human. And this kind of emotion can bring other nice things like courage, power and perseverance to us. People in American and British regard love as a kind of culture. Love just like an old tree growing in their mind, so they can express it or use it easily. As to how to use it, maybe we can learn something meaningful from the movie . Love between mother and son, love between lover, love between comrades, love between strangers and so on. Whether American or Chinese, love is the same goal from the ancient. Although Chinese prefer to hide this feeling in deep inside, it can still be accepted by other people. On other hand, western people’ way to show love can be accepted by themselves. There is no bad or good way about how to express love.

  We are supposed to keep running in our life and never give up. Remember to love, and don’t be afraid. Just like Gump said:” Life was like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get”.
