2019-2020年高中英语必修一:Unit 4 Earthquakes说课稿
奋飞中学Hello, everyone. It’s my great honor to share my teaching ideas with all of you. My topic is A night the earth didn’t sleep taken from Unit 4 Earthquakes in New Senior English for China Student’s Book 1, by People's Education Press. And my teaching plan mainly consists of eight parts. They are as follows.
Part 1 Analysis of the teaching material
This lesson is a reading passage. It introduces the terrible earthquake in Tangshan, Hebei Province in 1976. It plays an important role in English teaching of this unit. By the end of this class, the students can know what happened before, during and after the Tangshan Earthquake.
Part 2 Analysis of the students
1. As the Senior Grade 1 students, most of them have mastered some basic reading skills, such as prediction, skimming, scanning etc. So they can get the general idea of the passage with teacher’s help.
2. It is the second period of this unit, so they have previewed the reading part but they haven’t got the idea of what serious damage that Tangshan earthquake caused.
3. Most of the students were born after 2000 year, so I suppose many of them haven’t heard of Tangshan earthquake and don’t know the background information.
Part 3 Analysis of the teaching aims
According to the New Curriculum Standards and the Outline, I set the teaching aims as follows.
Knowledge aims:1. To help Ss get the main idea of the passage.
2. To guide Ss understand some key language points.
Ability aims:
1. To help Ss develop some reading skills, such as skimming, scanning and so on.
2. To help them develop the cooperative ability by previewing the passage.
Emotional aim:
To encourage students to help people in need.
Part 4 Analysis of the key and difficult points
Key points:
1. To Understand the article clearly.
2. To Learn some new words and useful expressions.
Difficult point:
To understand the serious damage that Tangshan earthquake caused.
Part 5 Analysis of teaching methods and aids
The modern teaching demands the teacher should help to improve the
to learn. A good teaching method requires that the students should students’ ability
be the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as a director. According to
the analysis of the teaching material and the students’l earning background, I will
use the following methods.
Task-based teaching approach(任务教学法);Total Situational Action
method(情景教学法);Question-and-answer activity teaching method (问答教学
法)and the Cooperative teaching method(合作教学法). I’ll also try to introduce
Inverted Class(翻转课堂) to them. The teaching aids mainly include the multimedia,
the Guiding paper, and the assistant book.
Part 6 Analysis of the teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead in
1. Recognizing disasters
Show students the pictures of different natural disasters and help them to recognize them and see how severe the damage is.
Questions: Do you know what kind of natural disaster it is ? Have you ever experieced that ?
2. Then show them an viedo of an interview. The interviewee has been in Tangshan for resuce work for more than two months.
Questions: Do you know what event he was talking about ?
Can you guess what did he do at that time?
Purpose: This lesson begins with a interview of a person who has been to the disaster scene to arouse stud ents ’ interest and at the same time lead in the topic. Step 2 Pre-reading
Look at the title of the passage, and then guess what the underlined word “ earth ” mean? A night the

here means more than the planet itself but the people on it.
Step 3 Fast-reading
Task1. Read to divide the passage into three parts.
Task2. Use three words to sum up the main idea of each part according to the timeline.
Task3. Find out the key word of each part.
Purpose: This step is meant to direct the students to understand the passage clearly and at the same time to exercise students’reading abilities: skimming, scanning and summing up. What’sm ore, help Ss know the process of Tangshan earthquake.
Step 3 Careful-reading
Task1. Description -- signs.
Play a game to encourage volenteers to come choose and explain the signs of an earthquake with a picture.
Task2. Press conference -- damage
Motivate students to work in a group to show this part as a news press. Several students come to the blackboard to answer questions as a prime minister, a mayor and a vice major. Others stand up in their places work as journalists to ask questions about the damage that Tangshan earthquake have caused.
Task3. Role play -- Rescue
Some students come to the blackboard to play roles as doctors & nurses, soilders and rescue workers. To show how important and hard the rescue work was. Encourage students to show more respect to them and be more willing to help people in need.
Purpose: This step is meant to have a try of the inverted class. I encourage students to preview the class and make preparation beforehand. These three tasks are to arouse Ss’ interest in learning English and using it.Task4. Multiple Choice
Help students to do some exercise to have review of this passage.
Purpose: This step is meant to have a review of reading passage after the three activities. Go over the text again will benefit a lot in the next task.
Step 4. Post-reading

Show some key sentence structures in this passage to reinforce the language points.
Purpose: This step is designed to help Ss get a better understanding of this passage and deal with some difficult language points.
Step 4. Homework
Motivate Ss to write a passage about their experience of flood this summer. Try to use the strcture and expressions in this reading passage.

After the lesson, I think I can help Ss understand the passage clearly. But what I need to improve is that because of time limit, Ss may not make a good preparation about this passage.
