A Strange Greeting, a True Feeling Last week I was invited to a doctor’s meeting at the Ruth hospital for incurables. That night, then, I took a pair of shoes to the shelter for frank. But as soon as he saw me he came running and placed his right foot against mine. After that, his 20 to me was always the same.

16. when。
17. another。
18. that。此处是so…that…
19. who。
20. what。
21. happiest。由后文的the best of…
22. necessarily。
23. comes。
24. forgotten。
25. around。
A
Kids will often ignore your requests for them to shut off the TV, start their chores(杂事),or do their homework as a way to avoid following your directions. Before you know it, you’ve started to sound like a broken record as you repeatedly ask them to do their assignments, clean their room, or take out the trash. Rather than saying “Do your chores now.” you’ll be more effective if you set a target time for when the chores have to be completed. So instead of arguing about starting chores, just say, “If chores aren’t done by 4 pm, here are the consequences.” Then it’s up to your child to complete the chores. Put the ball back in their court. Don’t argue or fight with them, just say, “That’s the way it’s going to be.” It shouldn’t be punitive(惩罚性的)as much as it should be persuasive. “If your chores aren’t done by 4 pm, then no video game time until chores are done. And if finishing those chores runs into homework time, that’s going to be your loss.” On the other hand, when dealing with homework, keep it very simple. Have a time when homework starts, and at that time, all electronics go off and do not go back on until you see that their homework is done. If your kids say they have no homework, then they should use that time to study or read. Either way, there should be a time set aside when the electronics are off.
When a kid wears his iPod or headphones when you’re trying to talk to him, make no bones about it;he is not ignoring you, he is disrespecting you. At that point, everything else should stop until he takes the earplugs out of his ears. Don’t try to communicate with him when he’s wearing headphones — even if he tells you he can hear you. Wearing them while you’re talking to him is a sign of disrespect. Parents should be very tough about this kind of thing. Remember, mutual respect becomes more important as children mature.
26.According to the passage, it seldom happens that ________.
A.kids turn a deaf ear to their parents’ requests
B.parents’ directions sound like a broken record
C.children are ready to follow their parents’ directions
D.parents are unaware of what they are repeating to their kids
27.Parents will be able to deal with their children more effectively if they ________.
A.avoid direct ways of punishment B.make them do things at their request
C.argue and fight with their children D.allow their children to behave in their own way
28.When the kid is doing his homework, parents ________.
A.should provide him with a good learning environment
B.can do whatever they like
C.can stay aside watching TV
D.must switch off the power
29.It can be inferred from the passage that ________.
A.parents should take off his headphones when trying to have a talk with their child
B.it will make no difference that a kid is wearing his earplugs while talking to his parents
C.parents shouldn’t give in to their kid when he shows no sign of respect
D.kids’ purposely talking to their parents with iPod gives them a sense of power and
control
30.The main idea of the passage is ________.
A.that respecting each other is more important than anything else
B.how kids behave to ignore and disrespect their parents
C.that children should make choices and decisions on their own
D.how parents can deal with their kids’ behavior effectively

English¬language senior business editors,senior copy editors,copy
editors and graphic designers
Writing snappy headlines
34.答案 A

Cyberspace, data superhighway, multimedia, for those who have seen the future, and the linking of computers, televisions and telephones will change our lives for ever.Yet for all the talks of a forthcoming technological utopia, little attention has been given to the implications of these developments for the poor.As for all the new high technology, the West concerns itself with the “how”,while the question of “for whom” is put aside once again.
Economists are only now realizing the full extent to which the communication revolution has affected the world economy.Information technology allows the extension of trade across geographical and industrial boundaries, and transnational corporations take full advantage of it. Terms of trade and exchange, interest rates and money movements are more important than the production of goods. The electronic economy made by information technology allows the haves to increase their control on global markets — with a destructive impact on the have-nots.
For them the result is unstable. Developing countries which rely on the production of a small range of goods for export are made to feel like small parts in the international economic machine. As “futures” are traded on computer screens, developing countries simply have less and less control of their destinies.
So what are the options of regaining control? One alternative for developing countries is to buy in the latest computers and telecommunications. Yet this leads to long-term dependency and perhaps permanent constraints on developing countries’ economies.
Communication technology is generally exported from the US, Europe or Japan;the patents, skills and ability remain in the hands of a few industrialized countries. It is also expensive, therefore imported products and services must be bought on credit usually provided by the very countries whose companies stand to gain.
36. From the passage we know that the development of high technology is in the interests of________.
A.the rich countries B.scientific development
C.the local elites D.the world economy
37.It can be inferred from the passage that________.
A.international trade should be expanded
B.the interests of the poor countries have not been given enough consideration
C.the exports of the poor countries should be increased
D.communication technology in developing countries should be modernized
38.Why does the author say that the electronic economy may have a destructive impact on developing countries?
A.Because it enables the developed countries to control the international market.
B.Because it destroys the economic balance of the poor countries.
C.Because it violates the national boundaries of the poor countries.
D.Because it inhibits the industrial growth of developing countries.
39.The development of modern communication technology in developing countries may________.
A.hinder their industrial production
B.cause them to lose control of their trade
C.force them to reduce their share of exports
D.cost them their economic independence
40.The author’s attitude towards the communication revolution is________.
A.positive B.critical
C.indifferent D.tolerant
36. 答案 A
文章第一段第二句指出“...little attention has been given to...the poor”,即很少有人注意这些发展对穷人的意义。
38.答案 A
根据第二段最后一句“...allows the haves to increase their control
on global markets...”
Yet this leads to long-term dependency...
本题较为简单,通过文中措辞,如第一段“little attention has...for
the poor”;第二段“Economists are only now realizing...”;第三段“For them the result is
unstable.”
D
Even plant can run a fever, especially when they’re under attack by insects or disease. But unlike human, plants can have their temperature taken from 3, 000 feet away straight up. A decade ago, adopting the infrared (红外线)scanning technology developed for military purposes and other satellites, physicist Stephen Paley came up with a quick way to take the temperature of crops to determine which ones are under stress. The goal was to let farmers precisely target pesticide (杀虫剂)spraying rather than rain poison on a whole field, which invariably includes plants that don’t have pest (害虫)problems.
Even better, Paley’s Remote Scanning Services Company could detect crop problems before they became visible to the eye. Mounted on a plane flown at 3, 000 feet at night, an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running“fevers”. Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would.
The bad news is that Paley’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years. Farmers resisted the new technology and long - term backers were hard to find. But with the renewed concern about pesticides on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning, Paley hopes to get back into operation. Agriculture experts have no doubt the technology works. “This technique can be used on 75 percent of agricultural land in the United States, ” says George Oerther of Texas A & M. Ray Jackson , who recently retired from the Department of Agriculture, thinks remote infrared crop scanning could be adopted by the end of the decade. But only ff Paley finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago.
41.Plants will emit an increased amount of heat when they are______________.
A. sprayed with pesticides
B. facing an infrared scanner
C. in poor physical condition
D. exposed to excessive sun rays
42.In order to apply pesticide spraying precisely, we can use infrared scanning to____________.
A. estimate the damage to the crops
B. measure the size of the affected area
C. draw a color-coded map
D. locate the problem area
43.Farmers can save a considerable amount of pesticide by______________.
A. resorting to spot-spraying
B. consulting infrared scanning experts
C. transforming poisoned rain
D. detecting crop problems at an early stage
44.The application of infrared scanning technology to agriculture met with some difficulties
_______________.
A. the lack of official support
B. its high cost
C. the lack of financial support
D. its failure to help increase production
45.Infrared scanning technology may be brought back into operation because of_____________.
A. the desire of farmers to improve the quality of their produce
B. growing concern about the excessive use of pesticides on crops
C. the forceful promotion by the Department of Agriculture
D. full support from agricultural experts
依据文章第二自然段第2行“...an infrared scanner measured the heat emitted by crops. The data were transformed into a color-coded map showing where plants were running‘fevers’”,说明植物在发“高烧”,也就是说,“身体状况”不佳时才会散发热,所以选项C符合题意。
42.D。 依据文章第二自然段第4行“...showing where plants were running ‘fevers’.Farmers could then spot spray,...” 显然,选项D(确定有问题的地域)为最佳选项。
43.A。 依据文章第二自然段最后一句“Farmers could then spot-spray, using 50 to 70 percent less pesticide than they otherwise would”(采取点喷,农民们可以节省平时用量的50%至70%的杀虫剂),选项A符合题意。
44.C。 依据文章第三自然段的第1句“The bad news is that Palely’s company closed down in 1984, after only three years.Farmers resisted the new technology and long-term backers were hard to find”,从中可以看出红外线扫描技术应用于农业遇到了一些问题,原因有两个:一是农民对新技术的抵制,二是难以找到长期赞助商。文章中还有一处明显的提示出现在最后一句:“But only if Palely finds the financial backing which he failed to obtain 10 years ago”.
依据文章第三自然段第2行“But with the renewed concern about pesticide on produce, and refinements in infrared scanning,Palely hopes to get back into operation”,可知B项(出于对杀虫剂过度使用的担心)符合题意。

He said they believe that an active way to deal with global warning helps everyone. The group said its members want to reduce costs they may face from future rules on greenhouse gas emissions. Trading credits may help businesses find the most effective methods to reduce pollution. Members also hope to improve their public image on environmental issues.
[D]. Their most detailed effort involved ninety-nine kinds of birds, insects and plants in North America and Europe. They found that the territory where these plants and animals live has moved north by an average of six kilometers every ten years. In Europe, some butterflies now live as much as one hundred kilometers to the north because of changes linked to higher temperatures.
[E]. The new report says many areas experienced unusual weather in two thousand and two. Most of Asia, for example, was warmer than usual. India had unusually high temperatures in April and May. The extremely hot weather caused hundreds of deaths. There also were extremely dry conditions across India. Parts of Africa experienced unusual heavy rains. Yet other areas in Africa had unusual dry weather.
[F]. Hydrogen is the most common element in the universe. Hydrogen is a colorless gas. On Earth, it is present in large amounts in natural gas, coal, plants and water. By weight, hydrogen produces the highest energy levels of any known fuel. When burned in an engine, hydrogen releases no harmful pollution into the environment. When powering a fuel cell, the only waste is water. However, hydrogen is difficult to store. It also burns easily.

As only students with good marks in exams are considered the “ apples in the eyes” of the teachers, most students think their teachers to be partial (偏心).
“ I feel sad to hear such remarks”, said Yu Yi , a well-known special-class teacher.
She recalled that in the past, teachers and students would play basketball together or comment on the novels while sitting on the grass during a break. But today, study and good marks are the only topics of conversation between students and teachers.
“Schools are not only the place where knowledge is imparted (传授) but also where students are taught how to be an upright person,” Yu said. “The success of a person is not merely determined by intelligence but also by emotional state. ”
Yang Xiong, director of the Juvenile Research Institute, said the educational system which focuses on examinations should be held to be substantially responsible.

Love and Concern Make Ideal Relationship
Students are becoming unwilling to tell their teachers of their inner thoughts because they are not equal in position and teachers lay too much emphasis on the academic performances of the students.
While some students might have doubts, I am willing to share my inner thoughts with my teachers. They show love and concern for their students and are good listeners. I always find it easy to seek support and advice from them, from which I benefit and learn a lot.
In this case, an ideal relationship between teachers and students is very important. In my opinion, this relationship should be one filled with love, care and understanding, in which teachers and students show respect for each other and exchange ideas freely. To build a relationship of this kind, teachers should become friends of students while students ought to place more trust in their teachers and give voice to their feelings frankly. Only by joint efforts can we enjoy a warm relationship between teachers and students.
