Experts say that you should read and listen to safety instructions before takeoff and ask question if you have uncertainties. You should fasten your seat belt low on your hips and as possible. Of course, you should also know how the release mechanism of your belt operates. During takeoffs and landings you are advised to keep your feet flat on the floor. Passage 2
Most people have had a dog or wanted one as their companion at some time in their lives. If you are thinking of buying a dog, however, you should first decide what sort of companion you need and whether the dog is likely to be happy in the surroundings you can provide. Specialists’ advice is useful to help you choose the most suitable kind of dog. But in part the decision depends on common sense. Different dogs were originally developed to perform specific tasks. So, if you want a dog to protect you or your house, for example, you should choose the one that has the right size and characteristics. You must also be ready to devote a great deal of time to training the dog when it is young and give it the exercise it needs throughout its life, unless you live in the countryside and can let it run freely. Dogs are demanding pets. Cats love the house and so are satisfactory with their place where there is secure, but a dog is loyal to its master and consequently wants him to show proof of his affection.
The best time to buy a baby dog is when it is between 6 and 8 weeks old so that it can transfer its love from its mother to its master. If baby dogs have not established a relationship with the human being until they are over three months old, their strong relationship will always be with dogs. They are likely to be too shy when they are brought out into the world to become good pets.

Passage 3
In the modern technological world the sea offers many resources to help mankind survive. Resources on land are beginning to grow less. The sea, however, still offers hope to supply many of man’s needs.
The riches of the sea yet to be developed by man’s technology are impressive. Oil and gas explorations have existed for nearly thirty years. Valuable amounts of minerals such as iron, nickel and copper exist on the ocean floor, ready to be mined.
Fish farming promises to be a good way to produce large quantities of food. The culture of fish and shellfish is an ancient skill practiced in the past mainly by oriental peoples.
Besides oil and gas, the sea may offer new sources of energy. Experts believe that the warm temperature of the ocean can be used in a way similar to the steam in a steamship. Ocean currents and waves offer possible use as a source of energy such as hydro-electric power.
Technology is enabling man to explore ever deeper under the sea. The new undersea technology is providing divers with diving suits and undersea chambers that are kept at sea level pressure. The development of strong, new materials has made this possible.
The technology to harvest the sea continues to improve. By the year 2000, experts believe that the problems to exploit the food, minerals, and energy sources of the sea will be largely solved.

All living things get their heat from the sun, which provides the conditions in which life is possible.
Since before the dawn of history, man has been able to make his own heat. He has been able to release the sun’s heat that is trapped in things such as wood, coal and oil. And he has been able to use this heat.
Heat has made civilization possible. With heat, man could melt metals. As man learned to use metals and fuels, industries grew. As a result, engines were invented. These are machines that change heat energy into mechanical energy. Engines can do the work of many men. Without engines industrial civilization is impossible.

Part Ⅵ. Writing
Should Private Cars Be Encouraged in China?
Some people argue that private cars should be encouraged in China. They believe the private cars can offer comfortable and convenient means of transportation. And the owners will have much time available to perform other businesses. In addition, private cars will bring about a rapid development of automobile industry. In the meanwhile, the growth of automobile industry can trigger the boom of other important industries, such as energy and technological application.
On the other hand, some people hold an opposite view on private cars. They say that more private cars will give rise to a series of social problems. First, more private cars will bring more serious environment pollution, and the waste gas will inevitably do harm to people’s health. Second, too many cars will make the traffic jams and accidents anywhere, anytime, which will possibly be a threat to people’s lives. Third, too many cars will unavoidably speed the energy consumption.
In my opinion, private cars should be discouraged in our country. In order to leave clean air, wide and safe roads and abundant energy resources to our descendants, we have to say “No” to private cars. As far as the great demand for means of transport is concerned, we can develop mass transit to take the place of private cars. 下载本文
