1. Learning English involves mastering the fixed collocations of common prepositions. These include "at" for locations, as in "at the airport"; "in" for time and places, as in "in the morning" and "in the city"; "on" for time and transportation, as in "on Monday" and "on the bus"; "by" for transportation, as in "by car"; and "with" for companionship, as in "with friends". These fixed collocations enable us to express ourselves more accurately and improve our English speaking skills.
2. Using the preposition "at" correctly, we can say "at home" to indicate being in one's residence, or "at work" to indicate being at one's job. Similarly, "at school" refers to being in an educational setting, while "at the station" means at a train or subway station.
3. The preposition "in" is used for time periods, such as "in the morning" which refers to the early part of the day, "in the afternoon" for the middle part, and "in the evening" for the later part. When referring to locations, "in the city" implies within the boundaries of a city, while "in the country" suggests being in rural areas.
4. With the preposition "on," we express the concept of time on specific days, as in "on Monday" which indicates the day of the week. "On the weekend" refers to the days Saturday and Sunday. When talking about transportation, "on the bus" means riding a public bus, while "on the train" indicates traveling by rail.
5. The preposition "by" is used to indicate means of transportation, with "by car" indicating travel in a private vehicle, "by train" for railway travel, "by plane" for air travel, and "by bus" for using a public bus.
6. The preposition "with" is employed to describe the company of others, as in "with friends" which means accompanying friends, or "with family" for being in the company of one's family members. In a professional context, "with colleagues" refers to being at work with coworkers, and "with classmates" is used for being with fellow students in an educational setting. "With teachers" can refer to being in a classroom or learning environment with educators.
