1.0 Purpose:

The purpose of this test is to describe the requirement and procedure to be used to perform cross hatch adhesion testing on paint. Cross hatch adhesion testing is performed to determine if a coating has adequately adhered to the substrate to which is was applied.

2.0 Specifications

ASTM D-3359 “Standard Test Methods for Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test”.

3.0 Apparatus and Materials

3.1 Multi-Tooth Cutter Blade.

3.2 Blade Holder/Handle

3.3 Flaking Brush

3.4 Permacel #99 Tape

4.0 Procedure for Testing

4.1 Select an area on the surface to be tested that is free of blemishes and minor

surface imperfections. Assure the test surface is clean and dry.

4.2 Place the test specimen on a smooth flat surface to insure adequate support.

4.3 Place the cutter assembly on the test specimen so that it rests on the nylon

protector and rear (narrow end) of the handle.

4.4 Grasp the handle and rotate it upward with respect to the line of contact of

the nylon guide with the test surface. During this motion, the tips of the cutter

first contact the test surface when the top of the handle is about seven

degrees with respect to the test surface. Continue this motion until the top

surface of the handle is elevated to about 15 degrees. This is the correct

attitude of the cutter assembly for the test.

4.5 With enough pressure on the handle to ensure that all of the cutter tips

penetrate to the test specimen supporting base, pull the assembly along the

test surface in one smooth motion through ¾ to 1 inch. Repeat this

procedure with a second cut intersecting the first pattern at 45 to 60 degrees.

4.6 Apply an approximately 2” long section of Permacel #99 tape over the

intersecting cuts. Use the back end of the cutter handle to smooth the tape

over the cut.

4.7 Within 90+/-30 seconds of application, grab the tape from one end and pull

the tape off the test specimen in one smooth, rapid motion back upon itself

as close to an angle of 180 degrees as possible.

4.8 Repeat this test in at least two other locations on the test specimen.

5.0 Acceptance Criteria

5.1 Place the tape used for the test on a General Hatch Test Data Sheet.

5.2 Inspect the grid area for removal of coating from the substrate or from a

previous coating.

5.3 Accept all parts that are 3B or above per Figure 1 of ASTM D-3359.

5.4 Submit test specimens and test results that do not meet 3B or above to the

Quality Operations Managers for review and disposition.Test Procedure
