Two European Summer Must ‘Seas’

When you think of summer，the beach，clear water，sunny skies，and relaxing days are a few things that come to mind，and two of the best places to experience these summer feels are two gorgeous European bodies of water：the Mediterranean Sea and the Adriatic Sea! These two incredible Seas hold some of my favorite travel memories．and I would revisit each one in a heart beat!

The Mediterranean Sea

The Mediterranean Sea can be accessed from various European countries as well as a few North African countries．And while many think of visiting Ibiza，Malta，or the Greek islands to experience the Mediterranean，my Mediterranean beach days came while visiting the seaside city of Marseille in the South of France! Marseille was a lovely city with easy access to the Sea，also with pretty sandy beaches．The gorgeous crystal clear blue water made it unlike any beach day in America! Not only were the beaches amazing，but the city of Marseille was adorable and filled with numerous cute shops and seaside restaurants．And the Mediterranean-style food was delicious!

The Adriatic Sea

The Adriatic Sea is equally as stunning and surely worth a visit! The Croatian coast has numerous beach clubs，some private and some public，that tourists are able to visit and you can experience the beauty of the Adriatic Sea there! Zrce Novalja，a Croatian seaside town I visited，was impressively featured by the rather rocky beach in place of sand．The rocks were small and smooth，making swimming in the sea and wading in the water just as easy as sandy beaches! Plus the locals in Croatia are also extremely friendly，making the experience even more memorable．

Helsinki is offering young people the chance to rent a cheap apartment in an old people’s home，if they agree to spend time socialising with the elderly residents．

The city council is seeking applications from renters under the age of 25 who will commit to spending between three and five hours each week with their older neighbours，at a care home in the eastern Laajasalo district．In exchange，they’ll get a studio flat measuring 23 square meters with a private kitchen，bathroom and balcony for 250 euros per month．

Currently only three flats are available．but the scheme is part of a wider effort to deal with a lack of accommodation for young people in the capital．Ordinarily a studio costs about 600 euros a month，depending on the area，one local university advises．

Those who apply don’t need any specific care experience．“There are staff to look after the elderly．”project manager Miki Mielonen tells Yle．“We are looking for young people who maybe have a different perspective on everyday life，who will bring variety and recreation to the elderly residents．”

More than 60 people have applied for the spaces in less than a week，and the idea has also been widely recognized by Finns on social media．“Great project，hopefully it will spread to other areas，”writes one person on ，while another applauds the scheme for bringing different generations together．

But some wish it was open to more people，with one user saying：“It's a shame the flats are so small．It would have been nice if the elderly had a small family with children or a single parent as their neighbour．”And one person has a different opinion about the cut-off age，writing：“Shame I'm too old for this—I would have surely applied．”

What did you eat for lunch today? Did you choose this dish because it was healthy，cheap or because it was just very tasty? Are you a particular eater or an adventurous diner?

I love exploring trends in food．‘Fusion cuisine’is not for everybody．My Italian grandmother would turn her nose up in disgust at the thought of tandoori pizza with mango topping but this marriage of tastes is perfectly fine in the 21st century．Chef and food writer Ching-He Huang，who presented a series of Chinese Food for the BBC，is a fan of the movement．She says：“Fusion has been happening for centuries，for as long as people have travelled，but with the Internet，and global travel，the exchange of ideas makes the process much faster．”

Wolfgang Puck is seen by many as one of the chefs who made‘fusion’elegant．He got his experience in this aspect in his native Vienna and made a name for himself when he opened his own restaurant in Los Angeles in the 1970s．This European dug into Asian cuisine and became one of the first in a long line of distinguished chefs．He said in an interview with the Wall Street Journal that initially he got negative responses from traditional American—Chinese restaurant owners but he is not bitter．“I believe authenticity is about evolution，not repeating your grandmother’s recipe．”he explains．“Cooking is like painting or writing a song．Just as there are only so many notes or colours．there are only so many flavours—it’s how you combine them that sets you apart．”

My granny’s cup of tea would be the Slow Food Movement．Founded by her countryman Carlo Petrini in the 1980s and still going strong，it seeks to preserve regional cuisine and the use of ingredients that are grown locally．Petrini wants to see farmers connected more directly with consumers．

All these trends give us food for thought．We might be wasting an exciting opportunity to wake up our taste buds when we swallow a sandwich at our desks．Tomorrow，why not find an exotic restaurant and enjoy a feast? You dress trendy so eat trendy!

The elevator of the future may be just over the horizon thanks to German company    ThyssenKrupp．The firm has invented a cable-free elevator(called MULTI)that can go up and    down like traditional lifts but the magnetic motors allow it to go side-to-side too．The designers predict that this technology could increase the carrying capacity of existing architecture by as much as 50％．Plus it looks really neat．

ThyssenKrupp plans to use light-weight materials to build its elevator ears of the future and the lack of a cable winch(钢缆绞车)will reduce weight as well．The ears wouldn’t just move up and down as they do now but would instead go in a circle that allows more cars to slip in fight behind the next．The result is that you might only have to wait 10 seconds for the next one to arrive rather than wait for the one you just missed to come back down．

The technology backing ThyssenKrupp’s MULTI elevator is very similar to magnetic    levitation(磁悬浮)systems used in high-speed trains．Each car has two magnetic motors—one    for vertical movement and another for horizontal．This system can also deliver power to the car's internal lighting and electronics without using wires．

A traditional cable driven elevator has mechanical components that can hold the car in place in the event of a power-off．ThyssenKrupp didn’t go into detail about safety measures in its announcement but it's safe to say the magnetic levitation elevator will have some sort of system to hold it in place if the lights go out．ThyssenKrupp is working on a test tower that will be used to develop the MULTI into a rear elevator technology．This should be up and running by 2016 but it will probably take at least a few more years before you get to climb inside a magnetic elevator car．
