四、阅读理解(22分,每小题2分)
A
Have you ever been sad because of failure? Please remember, for often, achieving what you set out to do is not the most important thing.
A boy decided to dig a deep hole behind his house. As he was working, a couple of older boys stopped by to watch. “What are you doing?” asked one of the visitors. “I want to dig a hole all the way through the earth!” the boy answered excitedly. The older boys began to laugh, telling him that digging a hole all the way through the earth was impossible. After a while, the boy picked up a jar. He showed it to the visitors. It was full of all kinds of stones and insects. Then he said calmly and confidently, “Maybe I can’t finish digging all the way through the earth, but look at what I’ve found during this period!”
The boy’s goal was far too difficult, but it did cause him to go on. And that is what a goal is for — to cause us to move in the direction we have chosen, in other words, to cause us to keep working!
Not every goal will be fully achieved. Not every job will end up with a success. Not every dream will come true. But when you fall short of your aim, maybe you can say, “Yes, but look what I’ve found along the way! There are so many wonderful things having come into my life because I tried to do something!” It is in the digging that life is lived.
56. Why did the boy show the jar to the older boys?
A. To drive them away. B.To show what he had found in digging.
C.To show how beautiful the jar was. D.To attract them to join him in the work.
58. What can be learnt from the last paragraph of the text?
A. No dream can come true. B.All work will end successfully.

A. Joy in the Journey B.A Boy Dug a Hole
C.No Pains, No Gains D.Failure Is the Mother of Success

This is an open letter to the three people who stole my handbag from the department store where I am employed as a shop assistant.
When you took my bag, I don’t know what you thought you were going to get. With my wages, there's not much left on a Tuesday. I hope the £5 was useful to you. If you really need a couple of pounds, I suppose you could always cash one of the two checks left in my check book. Of course, I phoned the bank right away and the check-cashing card is no longer valid, so it won’t be of much use to you.
Actually I don’t care about the money too much. We single parents who work to support our families understand only too well what it means to be short of cash. However, I don’t suppose it went very far among the three of you. Sorry about that!
I wish you had left the bag behind and just taken the wallet and check book. There were all kinds of papers and notes that I really need. I really think that was very inconsiderate of you. I mean, how would you like something like that to happen to you?
Well, perhaps the bag will turn up. It wasn’t even an expensive one, just a plain, old brown leather shoulder bag. You probably threw it in the nearest rubbish bin or threw it into the bushes. We've looked around, of course, but no one saw which way you went after you left the shop.
I'm not really angry with you. I know how the pressures of modern life can affect us, but I am sad at the loss of my personal things. I feel helpless. The police were very icy, and they just shrugged their shoulders. “It happens all the time,” they told me. Some small comfort, I suppose. But I’ve lost just a little more faith in human nature. And as my young son said when I told him what had happened, “Why? Mummy, why us?” I couldn't answer that question. I wonder if you can.
59. In writing Paragraph 2, the writer wants to .
A. describe the contents of the bag in detail B.tell the thieves hardly any money was available
C.state the fact that she was careless with the money D.give some suggestions to the three thieves
60. Which of the following is the most valuable to the writer?
A. The cash in her bag. B.The handbag itself.
C.The papers and notes in the bag. D.The check book in the bag.
61. What can we conclude about the police?
A. They have doubts about human nature. B.They think the case quite common.
C. They show sympathy to the woman. D.They are unable to find the thieves.
62. Why does the author write the letter?
A.To give the thieves a serious warning. B.To express her affection for her valuable bag.
C.To call people’s attention to their belongings. D.To complain about the fall of morality.

Death Valley, one of America’s great national parks, is a place of strange and silent beauty. As beautiful as this place is, its name provides evidence of very real danger. Death Valley is a land of beautiful yet dangerous extremes. There are mountains that reach more than 3,000 meters into the sky. There is a place called Badwater that is the lowest area of land in the Western Hemisphere. If there were water there, it would be 86 meters below the level of the ocean.
Death Valley can be dangerously cold during the winter months. Storms in the mountains can produce sudden flooding on the floor of the Valley. The air temperature during the summer has been as high as 57℃. The sun can heat the ground so that the temperature of the rocks and soil can be as high as 74℃. The extreme heat of Death Valley has killed people in the past. It will continue to kill those who do not honor this extreme climate. Death Valley does not forgive those who are not careful.
Death Valley is a good example of the violence of nature. It contains evidence of several ancient volcanoes that caused huge explosions. Evidence of one of these explosions is called Ubehebe Crater. The explosion left a huge hole in the ground almost a kilometer and a half wide.
In many areas of Death Valley it is easy to see where the ground has been pushed up violently by movement deep in the Earth. This movement has created unusual and beautiful rock formations. Some are red. Others are dark brown, gray, yellow or black. Other areas of rock look as if some huge creature violently broke and twisted the Earth to create unusual, sometimes frightening shapes.
In other parts of Death Valley there are lines in the rock that show clearly that this area was deep under an ocean for many thousands of years. Much of the Valley is flat and extremely dry. In fact, scientists believe it is the driest place in the United States.
Death Valley, part of the Great Mojave Desert, is a huge place. It extends more than 225 kilometers across the southern part of California, and across the border with Nevada.
63.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The water in Badwater is 86 meters below the level of the ocean.
B.The highest air temperature in summer can reach as high as 74℃.
C.The ground has been pushed up violently by explosions of volcanoes.
D.There might have been marine lives living in Death Valley.
. Why were some people killed by Death Valley?
A.Because they didn’t respect Death Valley and thus they were punished.
B.Because it is extremely hot in summer and dangerously cold in winter.
C.Because they were not careful enough to take with them what they needed.
D.Because several volcanoes erupted and caused huge explosions.

八、任务型阅读(10分,每小题1分)
Many people often lose their chance to live life to the fullest because of procrastination, which means that they always delay(拖延)doing something that must be done at once. Moreover, because they often put off their plans till “tomorrow”, they are less likely to achieve their goals and will give up their dreams and goals finally. As a result, we can say that procrastination is the enemy of a progressive lifestyle.
Now that we know procrastination is something bad, why do some people not take immediate action? Well, there are some things that result in procrastination. Depending on someone else rather than doing by oneself is one of the things. Whenever you wait for something to happen before you act, you make it easier to delay your goals and dreams until “someday”. Another cause of procrastination is that people do not value each moment in their day. Actually, it’s surprising how much you can do if you just decide to do little things with the little time you have. Also those who often procrastinate can always find a good reason for something they refuse to do at once.
If you are one of those who often delay, then it’s time for you to make a decision to act now because things happen only when we decide to act. Get down to doing something like losing weight, saving money or spending more time with family. Don’t let these things continue to be a desire(欲望)for you to do “someday”, but make a decision to do it now.
Once you have made your decision, write down the plan and take action immediately. Making plans can help you think carefully about how you are going to do what you need to do. After understanding how to do what you want to do, get doing with the plan. It doesn’t matter how small the move you make is as the little things you do accumulate(累积)over time and move you to be closer to your goals. So, don’t wait until tomorrow; instead, start now! Just make use of every moment you have to do something that is helpful in realizing your dreams and goals.
Here is a challenge that will also move you to be closer to your dreams and goals if taken seriously. Make a list of ten things you have been putting off. It could be anything from getting a health examination, calling a friend or family member, to getting the car fixed and cleaning out the garbage, etc. And then try to develop the habit of doing them immediately!

Should we help strangers?
We used to appreciate those who like to help strangers. But nowadays people tend to be very cautious of helping strangers. Recently our class had a discussion about whether we should help strangers. Opinions are divided on this topic.
Some think we should try to help others whether they are strangers or not. Helping others is a virtue, and it will make our society more harmonious. Besides, to some extent, helping others is helping oneself. We may come across some trouble and need others’ help some day. If everyone turns a blind eye to our trouble and turns a deaf ear to our appeal for aid just because we are strangers to them, it’s hard to imagine what our world will be like.
However, others are afraid that helping others can sometimes bring us trouble or even put us in danger. Sometimes we are just misunderstood and thus have to pay the cost of kindness.
In my opinion, we should try our best to help others when they are in need of help, but we should also protect ourselves to avoid getting into trouble. Only if everyone tries a little kindness, will society be full of love and trust be established between people.
如for one thing, for another; besides, firstly, secondly, last but not least等。也要使用一些高级的词汇词组如 be supposed to do sth, benefit 等以提升文章的档次分。在文章红可以适当使用一至两句谚语如:Every coin has two sides等可以大大提高文章的文采,提高获得高分的可能性。
【亮点说明】:本文中的高级结构还是较多的,如whether they are strangers or not.中的whether…or not
Only if everyone tries a little kindness, will society be full of love and trust be established between people.中的倒装句。Opinions are divided on this topic.以及n need of这个短语运用也较好。同时连接词的使用很到位,如However, In my opinion等。下载本文
