A United Nations report released Monday said that almost 690 million people--1 in 9 of the world's population—suffered from hunger last year, a major downward change of previous estimates.

The lander-ascender (上升器) combination of China's Chang’e 5 robotic lunar probe (探测器) has finished gathering subsurface samples and packed them in vacuum container and is continuing collecting surface samples, according to the China National Space Administration.

The administration said in a statement on Wednesday morning that the drilling and packing processes of rocks and soil from 2 meters beneath lunar surface concluded at 4:53 am. A mechanical arm is continuing gathering surface samples.

The combination landed on the moon at 11:11 pm on Tuesday, becoming the third spacecraft that has successfully touched down on the lunar surface this century. The first two aircraft that had achieved this are also from China — the Chang’e 3 and 4. The combination is tasked with collecting about 2 kilograms of samples.

China’s largest and most sophisticated lunar probe, Chang’e 5 was launched by a Long March 5 heavy-lift carrier rocket early on Nov 24 at the Wenchang Space Launch Center in Hainan province, undertaking the world’s first mission since 1976 to return lunar samples to Earth. The spacecraft is composed of four parts — orbiter (轨道飞行器), lander, ascender and re-entry capsule (返回舱).

Before the landing, Chang’e 5 separated into two parts — the orbiter-reentry capsule combination and the lander-ascender combination — in a lunar orbit early on Monday morning so as to prepare for the landing operation.

While the lander-ascender combination is carrying out surface operations, the orbiter-reentry capsule combination is traveling in a lunar orbit at an average altitude of around 200 km above the moon. After all surface operations are done, an engine on the ascender will lift it to meet the reentry module. It will transfer the lunar samples to the module and then separate from it.

The orbiter-reentry combination capsule will then return to the Earth’s orbit, where the pair will break up and the reentry capsule will return to a preset landing site in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region in mid-December.

If the mission is successful, it will make China the third nation to bring samples back from the moon, after the United States and the former Soviet Union.

Oriola Oluwaseyi, 32, makes her way through the busy streets of Ajegunle, a low-income community in Nigeria's commercial center, Lagos.

The Nigerian mother of four is pushing through people and things in the streets to collect plastic waste bottles from retail stores. In the evening, Oluwaseyi will drop the bottles at Moritz International School where her 8-year-old daughter attends primary school. The bottles will act as a down payment for her daughter's tuition. As a small trader earning a little from trading car engine oil at busy Ajegunle Market in Nigeria's economic center, Lagos, Oluwaseyi does not earn enough to cover the annual 18,000- naira( around $ 50) school fees.

"Whenever a new session is about to start, sometimes we get worried when there is no money," Oluwaseyi said. However, thanks to a recent partnership with Africa Cleanup Initiative （ ACI ）, a non-governmental organization with focus on sustainability （可 持续 性），Oluwaseyi's daughter's school now accepts the plastic bottles, also known as PET bottles, in exchange for school fees. Through a program called Recycles Pay, ACI collaborates（合作）with schools in low-income communities to allow parents who are unable to afford fees for their children to pay using plastic bottles they collect.

Twice a month Oluwaseyi visits her daughter's school with bags full of sorted plastic bottle recyclable. The cost of tuition is determined by how many PET bottles she has collected.

Disasters almost always arrive unexpectedly. But there are computer apps to help people prepare for disasters. Some apps alert users when a disaster has taken place. 

1. Siren GPS Mobile

The free Siren GPS Mobile app connects users to emergency services at the tap of the screen. The app will let emergency workers know where the person in need is.

The app works over cellphone networks. But it also works on Wi-Fi if cellphone networks are down after an emergency.

Users can create a personal health report on the app to share with emergency services. This will provide information about medicines that users take, allergies they might have and other medical information important to treatment decisions.

2. Life360

The Life360 app provides a service to keep the loved ones connected. Users can set up a network of people to share their location, chat and get alerts when they are near someone in their network. People in the same network can use the app on iPhone and Android devices.
