1、Home on the Way旅人的家
People need homes: children assume their parents' place as home; boarders call school "home" on weekdays; married couples work together to build new homes; and travelers … have no place to call "home", at least for a few nights.
So how about people who have to travel for extended periods of time? Don’t they have the right to a home? Of course they do.
Some regular travelers take their own belongings: like bed sheets, pillowcases and family photos to make them feel like home no matter where they are; some stay for long periods in the same hotel and as a result become very familiar with service and attendants; others may simply put some flowers by the hotel window to make things more homely. Furthermore, driving a camping car during one’s travels and sleeping in the vehicle at night is just like home -- only mobile!
And how about maintaining relationships while in transit? Some keep contact with their friends via internet; some send letters and postcards, or even photos; others may just call and say hi, just to let their friends know that they're still alive and well. People find ways to keep in touch. Making friends on the way helps travelers feel more or less at home. Backpackers in youth hostels may become very good friends, even closer than siblings.
Nowadays, fewer people are working in their local towns, so how do they develop a sense of belonging? Whenever we step out of our local boundaries, there is always another "home" waiting to be found. Wherever we are, with just a little bit of effort and imagination, we can make the place we stay "home".
2、Youth青春
Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity, of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20. Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.
Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spring back to dust.
Whether 60 or 16, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing childlike appetite of what's next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station: so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the Infinite, so long are you young.
When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at 20, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at 80.
3、I remember, I remember
I remember, I remember the house where I was born, the little window where the sun
came peeping in at morn; he never came a wink too soon nor brought too long a day; but now, I often wish the night had borne my breath away.
I remember, I remember the roses red and white, the violets and the lily-cups— those flowers made of light! The lilacs where the robin built, and where my brother set the laburnum on his birthday,— the tree is living yet!
I remember, I remember where I used to swing, and thought the air must rush as fresh to swallows on the wing; my spirit flew in feathers then that is so heavy now, and summer pools could hardly cool the fever on my brow.
I remember, I remember the fir trees dark and high; I used to think their slender tops were close against the sky: it was a childish ignorance, but now this little joy to know I’m farther off from heaven than when I was a boy.
I used to like sheepherder coffee, a cup of grounds in my old enameled pot, then three cups of water and a fire,
and when it’s hot, boiling into froth, a half cup of cold water, to bring the grounds to the bottom.
It was strong and bitter and good, as I squatted on the riverbank, under the great redwoods all those years ago.
Some days, it was nearly all I got. I was happy with my dog, and cases of books in my funky truck.
But when I think of that posture now, I can’t help but think of Palestinians huddled in their ruins,
the Afghan shepherd with his bleating goats, the widow weeping, sending off her sons, the monk who can’t go home.
There are fewer names for coffee, than for love. Squatting, they drink, thinking, waiting for whatever comes.
5、Freedom Choice and Responsibility
I love choices.
I love to walk around in bookstores-not because I can buy all the books,
but because I could buy one book, and I have so many to choose from.
I like buffets.
I rarely get to go to them, but when I do,
the first thing I do is to walk around and see what the choices are.
I also like the Internet.
It seems like cyberspace really doesn't have any limits.
There are so many things to discover--- like space.
Sometimes, I think we don't appreciate the freedom that we have.
We are free to make many different choices.
From the food we eat--- to the places we visit--- to the people we meet--- to the classes we take and on and on and on.
But freedom has dangers. If misused, it can be harmful.
I could pile a mountain of food on my plate and NOT to eat it.
It would be a waste. But that's a choice I have.
The Internet has dangers, too.
If parents are not careful and don't supervise what their kids can see--- well kids can lose some of their innocence because of freedom.
There's a reason for legal age limits when it comes to driving, gambling, drinking, smoking, and voting.
Until we reach that age, we aren't free to do those things.
6、Lessons learning from daily life从日常生活中学到的教训
When I was a child, I always like reading fairy tales about heroes who were good,
who had to go through many difficult situations often battling the bad guys before he or she lived happily ever after.
I grew up thinking that the good always trumped over the evil.
Hollywood films are like that too.
No matter what the arts the usually wins at end.
No matter what happens in the movie,
you can assume at the end the good guys win.
Well, even though the stories are not so realistic and even though we rarely face peculiar tasks,
there are some similarities we share with the heroes of the stories or the movies.
We learn lessons every day.
Just like the characters in,
there are lessons to be learned from my daily adventures.
Sometimes the adventures are bit ordinary, but the experience is ...
The more experience we have and lessons we learn,
the better we can function and the adventures just get easier,
or at least we can take on bigger challenges or at least avoid making the same mistakes.
7、In Hardwood Groves
The same leaves over and over again!
They fall from giving shade above
To make one texture of faded brown
And fit the earth like a leather glove.
Before the leaves can mount again
To fill the trees with another shade,
They must go down past things coming up.
They must go down into the dark decayed.
They must be pierced by flowers and put
Beneath the feet of dancing flowers.
However it is in some other world
I know that this is the way in ours.
8、Is there inside you?
Is there inside you? Very much , ever since you were brought into this world. when you couldn't open your mouth till the first two years on planet earth, inner voice is the one through which you interpreted and understood things.
Inner voice is the voice mouth of the subconscious mind .the subconscious mind is always acting as a secondary reflector of thoughts and ideas in the body. It justifies and rationalizes what is right and what is wrong. When we go against what the inner voice say we get a guilty conscious and are bothered by it throughout our lives.
At times when we are feeling low or those unforgettable moments when we are let down, we seem to need some kind of emotional or mental support. We usually speak to our closest pal or our dearest family member during times of distress to ease the burden .At such times we get over the initial drizzle of emotional anxiety and mental restlessness, because of the pepping up by our empathic listener. We suddenly feel rejuvenated because our inner voice alerts us to get on with things and leave the things of past on the memory books of our brain.
The inner voice is always right most of the times because it knows us better than others and probably even ourselves. It is the dare devil child of the intuitions which we have been having since childhood. It's good to go by intuitions most of the times because it’s the response provided due to the synchronism between our mental and physical being.
Whenever you are trying your first cigarette, or whenever you are asked to take sides in an argument, you are always in a sense of dilemma. During these times your inner voice automatically gives its verdict, which when overwritten, might leave us unhappy in the future. It's up to us to either ignore the morale booster inside us or go out to the world and search for spiritual guru's and happiness, when all these things are very much present within us.
9、Song of the Flower
I am a kind word uttered and repeated
By the voice of Nature;
说出去,又反复细念;
I am a star fallen from the
Blue tent upon the green carpet.
I am the daughter of the elements
With whom Winter conceived;
To whom Spring gave birth; I was
Reared in the lap of Summer and I
Slept in the bed of Autumn.
冬天将我孕育;
春天使我绽放;
夏天让我成长;
At dawn I unite with the breeze
To announce the coming of light;
宣告光明的到来;
At eventide I join the birds
In bidding the light farewell.
The plains are decorated with
My beautiful color and the air
Is scented with my fragrance.
使风光更加旖旎;
As I embrace Slumber the eyes of Night watch over me, and as I
Awaken I stare at the sun, which is
The only eye of the day.
夜空数双眼睛对我凝望;
I drink dew for wine, and hearken to
The voices of the bird and dance
To the rhythmic swaying of the grass.
我饮着朝露酿成的琼浆;
听着小鸟的鸣啭歌唱;
I am the lover's gift; I am the wedding wreath;
I am the memory of a moment of happiness;
I am the last gift of the living to the dead;
I am a part of joy and a part of sorrow.
我是爱人间的赠礼;我是婚礼的冠冕;
我是片刻欢愉的记忆;
我是生者予死者最后的祭献;
But I look up high to see only the light,
And never look down to see my shadow.
This is wisdom which man must learn.
而我仰望高空,只因对光明神往;
10、A Morning Wish
The sun is just rising in the morning of another day. What can I wish that this day may bring me? Nothing that shall make the world or others poorer, nothing at the expense of other men; but just those few things which in their coming do not stop me but touch me rather, as they pass and gather strength.
I wish that this day could bring me a few friends, who understand me, and yet remain my friends; I also wish that this day could bring me a work to do which has real value.
I wish that this day could bring me a mind unafraid to travel, even though the trail be not blazed, and I wish that this day could bring me an understanding heart.
I wish that this day could bring me a sight of the eternal hills, and the blue sea stretching to the horizon, and of something beautiful which the hands of men have made.
I wish that this day could bring me a sense of humor, and the power to laugh, a little leisure with nothing to do.
And I crave for a few moments of quiet, silent meditation in the morning of this day.
11、The first snow初雪
The first snow came. How beautiful it was, falling so silently, all day long, all night long, on the mountains, on the meadows, on the roofs of the living, on the graves of the dead!
All white save the river, that marked its course by a winding black line across the landscape, and the leafless trees, that against the leaden sky now revealed more fully the wonderful beauty and intricacy of their branches!
What silence, too, came with the snow, and what seclusion!
Every sound was muffled, every noise changed to something soft and musical.
No more trampling hoofs, no more rattling wheels! Only the chiming of sleigh-bells, beating as swift and merrily as the hearts of children.
12、Love and time爱和时间
Once upon a time there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all the others, including Love. One day it was announced to all of the feelings that the island was going to sink to the bottom of the ocean. So all the feelings prepared their boats to leave .
Love was the only one that stayed. She wanted to preserve the island paradise until the last possible moment. When the island was almost totally under, love decided it was time to leave. She began looking for someone to ask for help.
Just then Richness was passing by in a grand boat. Love asked, "Richness, can I come with you on your boat?" Richness answered, "I'm sorry, but there is a lot of silver and gold on my boat and there would be no room for you anywhere."
Then Love decided to ask Vanity for help who was passing by in a beautiful vessel. Love cried out, "Vanity, help me please!" "I can't help you," Vanity said, "You are all wet and will damage my beautiful boat."
Next, Love saw Sadness passing by. Love said, "Sadness, please let me go with you." Sadness answered, "Love, I'm sorry, but, I just need to be alone now."
Then, Love saw Happiness. Love cried out, "Happiness, please take me with you." But Happiness was so overjoyed that he didn't hear Love calling to him.
Love began to cry. Then, she heard a voice say, "Come Love, I will take you with me." It was an elder. Love felt so blessed and overjoyed that she forgot to ask the elder his name. When they arrived on land the elder went on his way. Love realized how much she owed the elder.
Love then found Knowledge and asked, "Who was it that helped me?" "It was Time,' Knowledge answered. "But why did Time help me when no one else would? "Love asked. Knowledge smiled and with deep wisdom and sincerity, answered, "Because only Time is capable of understanding how great Love is.
13、A Tribute to the Dog
The best friend a man has in the world may turn against him and become his enemy. His son or daughter that he has reared with loving care may prove ungrateful. Those who are nearest and dearest to us, those whom we trust with our happiness and our good name may become traitors to their faith.
The money that a man has, he may lose. It flies away from him, perhaps when he needs it most. A man's reputation may be sacrificed in a moment of ill-considered action. The people who are prone to fall on their knees to do us honor when success is with us, may be the first to throw the stone of malice when failure settles its cloud upon our heads.
The one absolutely unselfish friend that man can have in this selfish world, the one that never deserts him, the one that never proves ungrateful or treacherous is his dog. A man's dog stands by him in prosperity and in poverty, in health and in sickness. He will sleep on the cold ground, where the wintry winds blow and the snow drives fiercely, if only he may be near his master's side. He will kiss the hand that has no food to offer.
He will lick the wounds and sores that come in encounters with the roughness of the world. He guards the sleep of his pauper master as if he were a prince. When all other friends desert, he remains. When riches take wings, and reputation falls to pieces, he is as constant in his love as the sun in its journey through the heavens. If fortune drives the master forth, an outcast in the world, friendless and homeless, the faithful dog asks no higher privilege than that of accompanying him, to guard him against danger, to fight against his enemies.
And when the last scene of all comes, and death takes his master in its embrace and his body is laid away in the cold ground, no matter if all other friends pursue their way, there by the graveside will the noble dog be found, his head between his paws, his eyes sad, but open in alert watchfulness, faithful and true even in death.
14、Freedom parrot
A man, a great man, a fighter for freedom was traveling in the mountains. He stayed in a caravans for the night. He was amazed that in the caravans there was a beautiful parrot in a golden cage, continually repeating "Freedom! Freedom!". And it was such a place that when the parrot repeated the word "Freedom!" it would go on echoing in the valleys, in the mountains.
The man thought: "I have seen many parrots, and I have thought they must want to be free from those cages... but I have never seen such a parrot whose whole day, from the morning to the evening when he goes to sleep, is spent in calling out for freedom." He had an idea. In the middle of the night, when the owner was fast asleep, he got up and opened the door of the cage. He whispered to the parrot, "Now get out."
But he was very surprised that the parrot was clinging to the bars of the cage. He said to him again and again, "Have you forgotten about freedom? Just get out! The door is open and the owner is fast asleep; nobody will ever know. You just fly into the sky; the whole sky is yours."
But the parrot was clinging so deeply, so hard, that the man said, "What is the matter? Are you mad?" He tried to take the parrot out with his own hands, but the parrot started pecking at him, and at the same time he was shouting, "Freedom! Freedom!" The valleys in the night echoed and re-echoed, but the man was also stubborn; he was a freedom fighter.
He pulled the parrot out and threw him into the sky; and he was very satisfied, although his hand was hurt. The parrot had attacked him as forcefully as he could, but the man was immensely satisfied that he had made a soul free. He went to sleep.
In the morning, as the man was waking up, he heard the parrot shouting, "Freedom! Freedom" He thought perhaps the parrot must be sitting on a tree or on a rock. But when he came out, the parrot was sitting in the cage. The door was open.
15、On beauty美
Where shall you seek beauty, and how shall you find her unless she herself be your way and your guide? And how shall you speak of her except she be the weaver of your speech?
The aggrieved and the injured say, "Beauty is kind and gentle. Like a young mother half-shy of her own glory she walks among us."
And the passionate say, "Nay, beauty is a thing of might and dread. Like the tempest she shakes the earth beneath us and the sky above us."
The tired and the weary say, "Beauty is of soft whisperings. She speaks in our spirit. Her voice yields to our silences like a faint light that quivers in fear of the shadow."
But the restless say, "We have heard her shouting among the mountains, and with her cries came the sound of hoofs, and the beating of wings and the roaring of lions."
At night the watchmen of the city say, "Beauty shall rise with the dawn from the east."
And at noon-time the toilers and the wayfarers say, "We have seen her leaning over the earth from the windows of the sunset."
In winter say the snow-bound, "She shall come with the spring leaping upon the hills."
And in the summer heat the reapers say, "We have seen her dancing with the autumn leaves, and we saw a drift of snow in her hair."
All these things have you said of beauty, yet in truth you spoke not of her but of needs unsatisfied, and beauty is not a need but an ecstasy. It is not a mouth thirsting nor an empty hand stretched forth, but rather a heart enflamed and a soul enchanted. It is not the image you would see nor the song you would hear, but rather an image you see though you close your eyes and a song you hear though you shut your ears. It is not the sap within the furrowed bark, nor a wing attached to a claw, but rather a garden for ever in bloom and a flock of angels for ever in flight.
Beauty is life when life unveils her holy face.
