Benefits convenience low-cost efficiency
Chance opportunity
There was a time when air travel was only for the wealthy people and out of reach of the majority of citizens . But now low-cost flights are available in many countries . I believe this is , overall, a positive development .
N of n
The primary advantage of low-cost flights is , of course , the cost . Some discount airline tickets are so cheap that they cost even less than the airport tax . This change can certainly give more people access to air travel and increase the efficiency of traveling , either for business or for pleasure , worldwide .
In terms of developing tourism , low-cost airlines surely have their inherent advantage as well. They provide more tourists with the chance to travel by air . Time is valuable for travellers because very few of us have a long vacation . Compared with a train or a bus journey , low-cost flights do not cost much more but saves us a great deal of time , which means tourists will have more time and energy for tours in their destinations .
One coin has two sides ,there is still something insufficient ,such as ,Some people are worried that low-budget air travel may be uncomfortable or more tiresome than regular flights . In fact , most low-cost airlines provide the same space for the economy-class passengers . Even if we really feel unhappy with the seats , we can always get a better seat with very little additional cost . Other people may complain that cheap air travel consumes more fuel and causes pollution when on increasing number of people travel by air . But so far there is no evidence that cheap air travel is more damaging to the environment than bus rides or train rides because air trips have consumed less time
So my conclusion is that not only can low-cost airlines offer us inexpensive flights ,they also give us greater convenience and more options , on which we can not put a price tag .

The production and transportation of food has been heavily influenced by modern technology . To what extent do you think this is a positive development ?
For over a decade , the impact of industry of technology on the food industry has been a major public concern .( I hold the strong opinion that this is a positive tendency )
I believe technological innovations brought about plenty of benefits to the production and transportation of food . For consumers , the application of technology in food production has greatly increased the variety of food available to us , which can mean more choices and better taste . For example, modern technology can modify the genetic makeup of animals to produce meat that is high-protein but low-fat , further , frozen food provides more convenience for people , especially the city residents who are always busy . Now we do not have to do the chore of cooking meals every day . Finally , the production of food on assembly lines cuts the cost for business and consumers can now purchase goods at a much lower price than before, which means we would be left with more money for education and entertainment .
But the dark side of the development is the modern way of producing and transporting food often damages/pollutes the environment . For example , to increase the crop yield , farmers often grow plants with the help of chemical fertiliser . Which means the ecological balance can be easily destroyed . Health concerns are also raised about genetically-modified food and the fish taken from polluted rivers and lakes worldwide.
Drawbacks shortness weakness
On balance , it seems that modern technology is conductive to a simpler and more pleasant lifestyle in terms of food what scientists should improve is to make the food industry " green " in the future .
Many people ignore basic science today , what are the causes and what are your situations ?
While technological development are constantly covered by the mass media , basic science is hardly getting any attention from the public .
It tend to believe the public ignorance of basic science research is largely due to its unpredictable value . Compared with applied technology that can produce almost immediate benefits , basic science does not have short-term financial potential /return . In contrast , to develop basic science , scientists have to devote a great deal of time and energy to their research , while being very uncertain if this devotion will lead to the intended outcomes .therefore , many scientists become dissatisfied with their working conditions and earnings and in the end , they choose to leave their laboratories for other jobs , which can help to explain why basic science is often ignored by public .
Basic science is the foundation of most technological developments ,some steps must be taken to reverse this trend , on the national level , the government should fulfill its responsibility in raising public awareness of the significance of basic science . Only when the government gives priority to this field in its policy can basic science get the funding and the public support that is urgently needed . Also , companies and institutes should financially support scientist who commit /devote /dedicate themselves to basic science , not just for the sale of profit , but for the development of science as well .
The public should be made aware that there would be very few technological advancements if basic science were largely ignored . To make people have the awareness of supporting and respecting the basic science, governments should offer scientists nice compensation and highlight their contribution to society , with more interaction with the general public through the media , scientists can , hopefully , and gain the understanding and respect they really deserve .
Basic science deserves more public attention , certainly none of us wants it to become a completely stagnant field due to our ignorance . Strange as it may seem, the significance of basic science-the main driving force behind productivity , has been ignored largely by the general public
The reason for this unfortunate fact is in the nature of basic science .
To start with , basic science such as physics and chemistry has always been shroud in mystery or secrecy . Their areas of research are highly specialised . This fact , combined with some scientific movies , has made the scientists today no better understood than centuries ago. Further , the benefits of basic scientific research extends far beyond laymen 's perception , unlike applied science , basic science concentrates on the development of theories rather than the design of any specific products for practical use . In fact , the period between the invention of a theory and its first application can be as long as several decades . For that reason , basic scientific programs hold little attraction to investors and therefore are often undervalued . Consequently , the person who invented a theory is often unable to see it applied in his /her lifetime .
Basic science lays the foundation on which any other subjects are built . The false ideas among people should be corrected , to achieve this goal , governments should offer scientists nice compensation and highlight their contribution to society , with more interaction with the general public through the media , scientists can , hopefully , change the stereotypes of " lab animals " and gain the understanding and respect they really deserve .

Life was better when technology was simpler . To what extent do you agree or disagree ?
Modern technology has revolutionised life in three main fields : work , transport and communication .
Although modern technology is often blamed for stress and alienation , i doubt that many people would want to turn back the clock to he pre-technological age.
Despite the fact that life was simpler in former times, I would prefer not to return to that lifestyle, because that simplicity was due to a lack of choice. Before large jet airlines came in in the 1960s , for example , air travel was beyond the reach of most people . Before electronic cash registers , people had to spend a lot of time on math calculations to carry out transactions , furthermore , our knowledge of the world around us , especially foreign countries , was sketchy before television brought us the vivid images of documentaries .modern technology has brought liberation from the exhausting and boring labour and has set us free to enjoy more interesting work and leisure .
It is not even always true that modern technology is more complex to use than it was to perform household chores . Caring for a horse was a far complicated and time-consuming matter than starting up a car and taking it to the petrol station for its 5,000-mile services . 0ne has only to read novels from past time to realise the anxiety and frustration that resulted from transport systems limited to the speed of a horse .
The examples I have given are just a few of the many that can illustrate the case that modern technology makes life more convenient , probably what makes some people yearn for good old days is the speed of modern technology forces us to speed up our space of life . But sometimes this change can be resisted .
When we set ourselves simple priorities and stick to them .

When a country develops its technology , the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive . To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion ?
Overall, I disagree with the opinion expressed . I would like to begin by pointing out that " traditional skills and ways of life " are not automatically of one country , but of a culture or community .
In many ways, the history of civilization is the history of technology : from the discovery of fire to the invention of the wheel to the development of the Internet . We have been moving on from previous ways of doing things . Some technologies , such as weapons of mass destruction ,are of negative impact. Others, such as medical advances positively help people to live better or longer, and so very much help traditional ways of life .surely , few people would seek to preserve such traditions as living in caves .
Interestingly, technology can positively contribute to the keeping alive of traditional skills and ways of life . For example , the populations of some islands are too small to have normal schools . Rather than breaking up families by sending children to the mainland ,education authorities have been able to use the Internet to deliver schooling online. In addition, the Internet , and modern refrigeration techniques , are being used to keep alive the traditional skills of producing salmons ;it can now be ordered from and delivered to , anywhere in the world .
In conclusion , without suggesting that all technology is necessarily good , I think it is by no means "pointless " , in any way, to try to keep traditions alive with technology we should not ignore technology , because it can be our friend and support our way of life .

Some people argue that modern technology is increasing the gap between the rich and the poor . To what extent do you agree with their opinion ?
I agree with the statement that the development of technology is expanding the gap between the haves and the haves-nots . This is evident when we examine example like the startling contrast between the lives of millions of people who live on an average of 550 dollars per year and the lives of some high-tech entrepreneurs such as larry page and make more than 550 dollars every second.
Market economy means money is paid in exchange for the market demand that one can satisfy . Modern technology , the primary driving force behind the development of modern societies , results in higher productivity or more exciting game devices . It seems fair that people who invent or apply new technology are paid in proportion to the larger market potential that their work holds
Another reason why the income gap broadens due to technological advances is that technology is a form of intellectual capital . In human history , technology has never been a rising tide that lifted all boats . Since the wealthy can afford better education about technology , they have more intellectual capital to invest as well .
The gulf between the rich and the poor has been widening at a quickening pace also because the poor almost invariably have little chance of understanding and applying new technology : therefore they are very likely to remain mired in poverty ,so i think the most effective means to narrow th rich-poor gap would not be through financial aid or taxing the rich more heavily , but be through the provision of better educational and training opportunities to the needy .
Some people think that governments should stop investing in space research . To what extent do you agree or disagree ?
Overall, i do not think the astronomical sum of money spent on research is justified .
It is true that space missions satisfied human curiosity about other planets and the rocks brought back by astronauts may serve useful experimental purposes , regardless of how odd-shaped they are. Aslo, weather satellites transmit weather data to earth , which helps scientists to keep track of extreme weather conditions and give warnings on natural disasters .
In spite of these possible benefits , I believe part of the money spent on space programs should be channeled to solutions to more pressing social concerns , such as the AIDS ,epidemic , the soaring crime rate, and the widening gap between the wealthy and the needy .
So far, no spinoffs from space projects can fully justify the huge amounts of money invested in them , we humans would be much better off if certain proportions of the sums that have been allocated to space exploration can be allotted instead to some seriously under-funded fields such as the improvement of schools for the children , of hospitals for the ill and of charities for the deprived . I truly wonder if the supporters of space programs are aware that one single space toilet costs the taxpayers more than 0.2 million dollars .
Without suggesting that space research is entirely worthless , I believe the task of the government is to strike a wise balances between the competing necessities on earth and in the outer space . Clearly , the search for aliens should not be promoted at the expense of the survival needs of the millions of homeless or starving humans . 下载本文
