Yesterday while I was busy doing my housework, my daughter ran up to me and said," Mom, there's someone at the gate." It was an old beggar.I heard my daughter yelling, "Mom, he wants money." For a second I ignored her, but then it hit me what she just said.
I found my daughter taking out money from her Dad's wallet.Instead of stopping her, I stood there amazed at her action and realized kids give without hesitation and their kindness is impulsive (冲动的). Then I prayed to myself, "God, let my kid never outgrow (因年龄增加而失去) such a value and let that value grow on us adults."
Sure, we all want to do as many acts of kindness as we can, but let's also be honest —how many times have we done it in reality? How many times have we stopped ourselves from being kind? How many times have we chosen only to be kind to some?
As I witnessed yesterday, kindness and generosity require no thought.Kindness should be impulsive, when you feel it, act on it at that very moment.I know it might sound impossible to be kind all the time.Sometimes we hold back because in our minds we think kindness should be given to those who deserve it and need it.
But really, who deserves and needs kindness? We all do.The whole world does. One kind action leads to another.A single act of kindness throws out roots in al! directions, and the roots spring up and make new trees. The greatest work that kindness does to others is that it makes them kind themselves.

52.What can we learn from the first paragraph?
A.The author began to notice what her daughter was doing.
B.Beggars often called at the author's door.
C.The author was moved by her daughter's action.
D.The author didn't notice what her daughter was doing.
53.What is the aim of the passage?

The small town, Leaf Rapids, was the first in Canada to ban (禁止) plastic shopping bags, and it is now turning its attention to gas - powered vehicles.
Ed Charrier, the town's leader, wants local people to drive electric cars around the town to reduce greenhouse gases." Why would you start your gas - powered vehicle for a two - second ride when you could jump in an electric car?" asked Charrier, who plans to buy his own car next spring.
While he doesn't plan to ban gas -powered automobiles, he will promote energy - saving electric cars. The town of 600 people is only about three kilometers from end to end, with homes, shopping, parks and a lake connected by a network of roads.
Charrier said they're examining other incentives (奖励措施) for residents to turn to electric cars that can travel about 70 kilometers before the batteries need recharging.
Hundreds of officials from towns and cities across North America have called to ask about Leaf Rapids' historic bylaw (地方法则) that banned plastic bags last April. The town was getting so many calls that it posted the bylaw on its website.
"I never ever dreamt that it would be this big," said Charrier.Tofino, another town in Canada, followed Leaf Rapids' example and banned plastic bags. The Ontario Environment Ministry has asked people to reduce their plastic bag use by 50 per cent over the next five years.
Leaf Rapids' move also caused threats of legal action from the Canadian Plastics Industry Association ( CPIA )." It's our opinion that Leaf Rapids' actions are illegal," Association spokeswoman Cathy Circo said."But nothing has come of it," Charrier said.
Circo noted that Leaf Rapids has only a half - dozen stores, so its ban would be difficult to replicate (效仿) elsewhere.
The plastics industry supports voluntary reductions as well as reuse and recycling programs, Circo said.

A serious problem for today's society is who should be responsible for our elderly and how to improve their lives. It is not only a financial problem but also a question of the system we want for our society.I would like to suggest several possible solutions to this problem.
First, employers should take the responsibility for their retired employees. To make this possible, a percentage of profits should be set aside for this purpose. But when a company must take life - long responsibility for its employees, it may suffer from a commercial disadvantage due to higher employee costs.
Another way of solving the problem is to return the responsibility to the individual. This means each person must save during his working years to pay for his years of retirement. This docs not seem a very fair model since some people have enough trouble paying for their daily life without trying to earn extra to cover their retirement years. This means the government might have to step in to care for the poor.
In addition, the government could take responsibility for the care of the elderly. This could be financed through government taxes to increase the level of pensions (养老金).Furthermore, some .institutions should be created for senior citizens, which can help provide a comfortable life for them. Unfortunately, as the present situation in our country shows, this is not a truly viable answer. The government can seldom afford to care for the elderly, particularly when it is busy trying to care for the young.
One further solution is that the government or social organizations establish some working places especially for the elderly where they are independent.
To sum up, all these options (选择) have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, it is reasonable to expect that some combination of these options may be needed to provide the care we hope to give to our elderly generations.
58.What is the passage mainly about?
A.Where the old can go to get their pensions.
B.The problems faced by the old in society.
D.Why we should take responsibility for the old.
D.How we can improve the lives of the old.
59.The underlined word "viable" probably means "______".
A.successful B.impossible C.practical D.useful
60.What is the writer's main purpose in writing this article?
A.To instruct retired people on how they can have a happier life.
B.To make general readers aware of the problems of retired people.
C.To point out the need for government support for old people.
D.To discuss some possible solutions to an important social problem.
第二节(共5小题,每题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从下框的A—F选项中选出能概括每一段主题的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该选项涂黑。选项中有一项为多余项。
A.Listening skills can help you to be a good listener.
B.Examine the context to determine the main points.
C.Taking notes while you listen will improve your concentration.
D.Identify why what the instructor is saying is important to you.
E.Set up your situation to maximize (使……增至最大限度) the possibility of hearing and staying in touch with the lecture.
F.Learn to increase your attention span by timing just how long you can last before you think of something else.
Listening might be defined (界定) as the lost art of hearing and understanding what someone is saying. Each letter of the word LISTEN will guide you toward becoming a better listener.
61.
You need a reason for wanting to listen or you will be unmotivated during the lecture.Do you want to learn the content? What part of it? Usually you will do well only when you intend to put effort and skill into the task.To be interested in the lecture and to understand its' content is your responsibility. It's up to you to get what you want out of your class.
62.
Your eyes, ears, and brain are parts of your listening apparatus (器官).Take steps to insure the operation of each.Be rested enough for your brain to function. If you get sleepy, bring in some orange juice or coffee.Maintain eye contact to keep listening.Block out the noise and distractions (注意力分散) by sitting where you will be least bothered: the front row.If you can't hear what is being said, by all means, move away from the problem—whether it is human or mechanical.
63.
Write down the distracting thought and then set a goal a few minutes longer for the next "listening span." When your mind does wander, write down the thought and set a time when you will deal with it.Remember the brain works approximately four times faster than you can talk, so there is time for the mind to roam if you don't have a plan.Knowing how the instructor stresses important content will help you to follow him. What words or visual aids tell you that this information is important?
.
Action verbs and content nouns will help you to focus. Not all the content given in the lecture is needed.Check your syllabus and text or ask your instructor before so that you will know what topics will be covered each day.By skimming the assignment in advance you can get a feel for the facts as opposed to the main points. This will keep your ear tuned to hear the important information to make sure you're on the right track. When you know how the key content is handled, you can listen for the main points more easily.A few days of careful editing of notes will also get you geared up ( 准备好)to know what to listen for. When in doubt, check with the instructor or the teaching assistant.
65.
The very act of taking notes may help you stay tuned in.Even if the material sounds familiar, write down a word or two to remind you of the topic covered and to keep you listening.Once you are listening, think about how to write down the content you want.
