Many people, more or less, have heard about some complaints on the modern technology. Basically, they were divided on whether modern technology is a blessing or a curse for human society. In my perspective, the latter opinion is nonsense and no less than conservatism or anti- intellectualism with which mankind can not even make a single step toward higher civilization.
Why some people regard modern technology as a curse? Undeniably, the blooming technology to some extent did bring some troubles to the mankind. But every coin has two sides, what the people holding that opinion see is only the dark side. For instance, farmers armed to the teeth with advanced agricultural technology may make the earth over-exploited and directly accelerate the process of desertification, but we mustn’t ignore that with farmers’ reaping a rich harvest every year, feeding more poor people in undeveloped countries is becoming more doable and possible. Natural gas and petroleum as the blood of industry, once utilized by modern technology, have discharged tons of polluting gases to the air, but meanwhile it mightily pushed the economy forward and promoted the quality of human’s life. After all, in this world, nothing is perfect.
Like every sword has double edges, since we cannot change it, we had better know which side outweighs the other. If, during the industrial revolution, we dismissed the modern technology only for its causing some disasters to nature, then we would still live in the agricultural society in which we need to struggle for our lives through natural disasters or finding basic living materials with bare hands. If we abandoned the communication technology for its distancing people relationship, it would even cost us more than 10 days if we sent a message from Guangzhou to Beijing. I think we all do not want to live in a primitive way, nor the people who disdain modern technology, so why can’t we accept the fact that the advantages brought by the modern technology outweigh the disadvantages? We should attribute the fact that people are living the high standard life now to the development of modern technology, undeniably.
Moreover, over the long haul, the modern technology can exterminate the troubles it created. As we all know, the so-called developed countries also did great harm to the nature at their initial stage of development, causing some disasters such as the London Smog Incident. But the modern technology is progressing with each passing day. New technology, updated from the old one, can not only serve for the social progress but remedy the nature that we have polluted. London in Britain, Ruhr in German were once the heavy disaster areas, with the help of more updated technology, however, now both of them have been transformed into beautiful places, attracting millions of tourists every year.
In conclusion, modern technology is definitely a blessing for mankind. Every coin has two sides, as the so-called superior animal, we should know that focusing on the bright side is more valuable and reasonable than indulging in the dark one, at least.
