Our society is generally becoming one of giant enterprises directed by a bureaucratic management in which man becomes a small, well-oiled cog in the machinery. The oiling is done with higher wages,

Nell-ventilated factories and piped music, and by psychologists and “human

-relations” experts; yet all this oiling does not alter the fact that man has become powerless, that he is bored with it. In fact, the blue and

the white-collar workers have become economic puppets who dance to the tune of automated machines and bureaucratic management.

The worker and employee are anxious, not only because they might find themselves out of a job; they

are anxious also because they are unable to acquire any real satisfaction of interesting life. They live and

die without ever having confronted the fundamental realities of human existence as emotionally and intellectually independent and productive human beings.

Those higher up on the social ladder are no less anxious. Their lives are no less empty than those of

their subordinates. They are even more insecure in some respects. They are in a highly competitive race. Tobe promoted or to fall behind is not a matter of salary but even more a matter of self-respect. When they

apply for their first job, they are tested for intelligence as well as for the right mixture of obedience and

independence. From the moment on they are tested again and again – by the psychologists, for whom

testing is a big business, and by their superiors, who judge their behavior, sociability, capacity to get along,

etc. This constant need to prove that one is as good as or better than one’s fellow competitor crea constant anxiety and stress, the very causes of unhappiness and illness.

Am I suggesting that we should return to the preindustrial mode of production or to nineteenth-century

“free enterprise” capitalism? Certainly not. Problems are never solved by returning to a stage which one has

already outgrown. I suggest transforming our social system form a bureaucratically managed industrialism

in which maximal production and consumption ends in a humanist industrialism in which man and full

development of his potentialities – those of all love and of reason – are the aims of social arrangements.

Production and consumption should serve only as means to this end, and should be prevented from ruling

man.

-oiled cog in the machinery” the author intends to deliver the idea that man is _____

4. By “a well

A. a necessary part though the function of each is insignificant

B. working in complete harmony with the rest of society

5. The real cause of the anxiety of the workers and employees is that ________.

A. they are more likely to lose their present work

B. they have no real satisfaction or interest in life

C. they are confronted with the fundamental realities

D. they are deprived of individuality and independence

6. From the passage we can conclude that real happiness of life belongs to those _______

A. who always live at the bottom of the society

We humans love to stare into our smart devices. We gaze for hours—about 10 hours and 39 minutes a day—at our computers, smartphones, tablets and televisions. Is all this staring bad for us? It might be,mainly because as we stare at our devices we are exposing ourselves to blue light.

Blue light is a type of electromagnetic radiation with a very short wavelength that produces a high amount of energy. While it's true that light can damage our eyes under certain circumstances, there's no scientific evidence suggesting that blue light is harmful to our eyes. But many people still think it is,which is why blue light—blocking glasses are so popular. So do the glasses work?

“Everyone is very concerned that blue light may be causing damage to the eye,but there's no evidence that it may be causing serious damage,”Dr.Rahul Khurana, clinical spokesman for the American Academy of Ophthalmologists, told Business Insider.

Blue light exposure is nothing new.In fact, the sun is the largest source of blue light. Moreover, blue light is also present in LED light. But if blue light isn't harmful, then why are we constantly rubbing our

g at our screens? The answer is eyestrain(眼疲劳):More than 60 percent of people eyes when we’re lookin

experience eye problems associated with digital eyestrain. And blue light,it seems, isn't the cause.Instead, our eyes are so strained because most of us blink less when we stare at our digital devices. So if eyestrain is the real issue, blue light-blocking glasses are probably of little use.

8. What do we know about blue light?

A. It is a kind of nuclear radiation.

B. It has the shortest wavelength.

C. It may come from electronic devices.

D. It consumes a great deal of energy.

9. What causes the popularity of blue light-blocking glasses?

A. Evidence of their benefits to eyes.

B. Belief in blue light's harmful effect.

C. Widespread use of smart devices.

D. Scientific understanding of blue light.

10. What can be inferred from Paragraph 4?A. Blue light exposure is hardly avoidable.

B. Eye problems are not easy to deal with.

C. Blue 1ight may connect with tired eyes.

D. Rubbing eyes makes people strained.

11. According to the text, wearing blue light-blocking glasses may be_______.

A. tiring

B. harmful

C. useless

D. beneficial

Solar energy systems/power plants do not produce air pollution, water pollution, or greenhouse gases. Using solar energy can have a positive, indirect effect on the environment, when solar energy replaces or reduces the use of other energy sources that have larger effects on the environment.

However, some poisonous materials and chemicals are used to make the photovoltaic (光电池的) cells that convert sunlight into electricity. Some solar thermal (保热的) systems use potentially hazardous liquids to transfer heat. Leaks of these materials could be harmful to the environment. U. S. environmental laws regulate the use and settlement of these types of materials.

As with any type of power plant, large solar power plants can affect the environment near their locations. The placement of the power plant may have long-term effects on the habitats of native plants and animals. Some solar power plant-s may require water for cleaning solar collectors and concentrators or for cooling turbine generators. Using large volumes of ground water or surface water in some dry locations

may affect the ecosystems that depend on these water resources. In addition, the beam of concentrated sunlight a solar power tower creates can kill birds and insects that fly into the beam.

The amount of solar energy that the earth receives each day is many times greater than the total amount of all energy that people consume each day. However, on the sur~ace of the earth, solar energy is a variable and irregular energy source. The amount of sunlight and the intensity of sunlight varies by time of day and location. Weather and climate conditions affect the availability of sunlight daily and on a seasonal basis. The type and size of a soIar energy collection and conversion system determines how much of the available solar energy we can convert into useful energy.

12. Which of the following best explains "hazardous" underlined in paragraph 2?

A. inexpensive

B. dangerous

C. ineffective

D. abnormal13. What influence can large solar power plants have on the locations?

A. Polluting the ground water.

B. Protecting the habitats of plants and animals.

C. Damaging the local natural balance.

D. Attracting birds and insects to the area.

14. What does the last paragraph mainly tell us?

A. Different areas receive different amount of solar energy.

B. How to convert solar energy into useful energy.

C. The relationship between solar energy collection and the sunlight.

D. Some factors that influence the amount of solar energy collection.

15. What does the author think of the solar energy systems?

A. They are totally environment-friendly.

B. They have both advantages and disadvantages.

C. They should be forbidden in the future.

D. They shouId be encouraged in quantities.

第二节书面表达(满分25分)

52.例文:

52.例文:

The fable shares with readers a story about two sheep, both of whom choose cooperation rather than competition in order to have access to the fresh grass of different sides.

As a matter of fact, the fable mirrors that different attitudes may bring about different results. As an old saying goes, union means power. A chopstick breaks easily, while a bunch of them does not. Cooperation is therefore the best policy in any case because it can lead to a win-win situation, where both

sides can gain benefit by virtue of joint efforts.

In my daily life, I often cooperate with my classmates when playing basketball, taking part in running races or going in for community-service activities. I learn a lot from my classmates and friends by following their advice. Meanwhile, I also do my part to help them in return. It is teamwork that helps us secure numerous victories.
