Oliver lived in a flat in Holton city centre with his friend Peter. He liked good food, and he was teaching himself to cook. He planned a nice meal for Saturday night—chicken and chips with vegetables, followed by oranges in chocolate.

The chicken and vegetables went into the oven. Then he put the chocolate in a small pan, and put a big pan of oil on the cooker, for the chips. While it was getting hot, he started to peel the oranges. Just then, Peter came in.He started to tell Oliver about the football game.

Whoosh! The pan of oil, getting too hot, suddenly caught fire. At once, the fire was reaching the ceiling(天花板)and it seemed to jump onto Oliver’s shirtsleeve. Oliver shouted and threw himself on the floor. He rolled over on his burning sleeves, but the front of his shirt was already on fire. Peter caught a towel from the back of the kitchen door, and threw it over his friend. He knew you should never put water on an oil fire. Then he remembered the fire extinguisher outside the door of the flat. He got it, and put out the fire, and then at last he had time to ring the Emergency Services.

Let me tell you my story. It’s not very interesting or surprising, but people go on making the same mistakes so perhaps it will help someone. I come from a small town. I grew up in the usual way. I had a close friend, Zeng. We moved to the city together. At first, we shared a room and worked in shops, but then I won a big prize. I had lots of money! I did not need to go to work.
