With a Chinese entrance a teahouse, a traditional moon gate and a goldfish pond, the China Exhibit of the Memphis Zoo looked like a real Chinese garden. Special care had been taken to include flowers, animals and even insects from China.
The exhibit was designed to house very special guests: giant pandas from China. The pair of pandas who live here are on loan from China. The zoo went all out to gain approval to borrow these rare animals. It spent more than $16 million to build the China Exhibit. When Chinese officials visited the exhibit, they were impressed by the Chinese-style garden.
In April 2003, the Memphis Zoo arrived in Memphis Tennessee. In the first eight weeks, more than 200,000 zoo visitors welcomed the pandas.
Today, the crowd isn’t quite as large. But 8-year-old Le Le and 6-year-old Ya Ya are still the most popular zoo residents. Visitors can view them in their outdoor home that resembles a bamboo forest. Ya Ya loves to play on the temperature-controlled hot and cold rocks. The pair can also be seen in their climate-controlled glass apartment.
Research is a key part of the agreement. Before receiving the pandas, the Memphis Zoo submitted a detailed research plan. They agreed to study the nutritional value of bamboo. Also, scientists from Memphis and China will work together to study the giant pandas’ diet.

“East less and exercise more” – it has long been the mantra (咒语)for reducing those extra weight. But now it seems that all the hard work may have been in vain. Scientists say there are some other reasons why people just keep getting bigger.
Lack of sleep could be partly to blame. Sleep short-age changes levels of the hormones (荷尔蒙)that regulate (调节)food intake and body fat and increase hunger and appetite. If it is too hot or too cold. We burn calories to cool down or heat up. But if the temperature is just right the calories may be turned into body fat instead.
Those who take medicine to control their blood pressure can often put on weight. Similarly, studies have shown that going on the Pill can add to a woman’s weight.
Mother Nature may also be to blame, with our body shape being partly inherited(遗传的). The overweight are also more likely to settle with partners of a similar size, and their children are more likely to be fat. And the use of pollutants is on the rise. Say the researchers. The man-made chemicals in pesticides(杀虫剂)and plastics can lead to weight gain.
Your mother’s age and your weight at birth are also important. With older women more likely to have fat children and underweight babies having a bigger chance of being fat in later life. We also tend to put on weight as we get older. Finally, giving up smoking can also help pile on the pounds.
The scientists from Yale, Cornell and Johns Hopkins said there was some evidence supporting poor diet and lack of exercise as the main causes of overweight.

Dear Jane,
I’m very sorry to say that I will not be able to go to the party this evening because I am going to take the IELTS exam tomorrow morning. This test is very important for me. I have been preparing for it for a year. If I passed it, I would go to New Zealand to further my education.
It’s really a great thing to meet our former classmates. We haven’t seen one another since we graduated. I do miss them. What’s more it would be a great surprise to our teachers when so many of us go to see them tonight, because today happens to be Teachers’ Day, It’s a pity that I can’t come this time. Please give my regards to our classmates and teachers. I hope you all have a good time!下载本文
