Contents of the CD-ROM
The CD-ROM contains data on fertility and marriage for 192 countries of the world as presented in the World Fertility Report 2003 (United Nations publication, Sales No. E.04.XIII.10). Indicators are selected in such a way as to present a concise picture of reproductive and marital behaviour from both period and cohort perspectives. The data are compiled from civil registration, population censuses and nationally representative sample surveys. For each country, available data are presented for 2 dates. An earlier date centred on 1970 and a more recent date centred on 2000 or later. The indicators are organized in three datasets. The first presents period fertility indicators such as annual number of births, crude birth rate, age-specific fertility rates, total fertility rate, mean age at childbearing, mean age at first birth and percentage of extra-marital births among all births. The second dataset includes cohort fertility indicators such as the average number of children ever born, proportion of childless women and proportion of women with parity three or higher. The third set presents data on marriage including the annual number of marriages and divorces, the total first marriage rate, total divorce rate, mean age at first marriage, singulate mean age at marriage and age-specific percentages of ever-married persons. A separate file provides definitions of the indicators.
