The year of the tiger has gone and we have rabbit, dragon, horse, pig…year. What words can we think of for pigs?
Some bad words maybe, like silly, dirty, greedy(贪婪)…But are these true?
When we see pigs, they are usually in dirty water behind dirty fences. But pigs also want to be clean if they can. Pigs have no sweat glands(汗腺),so they have to get cool in water when they feel hot.
If people are greedy,we say they are“pig out”.Yes,pigs love eating a lot. But they are useful to people. People not only eat their meat but also use other parts of pigs. Pig skin is used for glue and shoes. The hair can be used to make brushes. Sometimes, pigs are even used to make medicine.
“He is as silly as a pig!" This expression is wrong. Pigs are very smart animals. Among all animals, they are the third cleverest—monkeys, dolphins and pigs. Scientists think the training of pigs is easier than the training of dogs and cats. Pigs have a very good sense of smell. They can find things nearby or faraway. Mr. Smith had a hotel near the biggest train station in London. A lot of
foreigners stayed there for the night. Mr. Smith only knew English, so he found it not easy for him to understand the people from other countries such as Russia, France and Japan. He thought Russian was boring but Japanese was interesting. So he asked a friend of his who knew Japanese to teach him. He studied hard and happily. At first he learned some, but soon he found that it wasn’t easy to remember Japanese words. His friend asked him to write down the useful words on his notebook so that he could use them. He did as he was told. He found it helpful for him to do so.
One evening, there were a lot of people in the dinning room of his hotel. They
were all busy eating something, but a Japanese was walking up and down there.
He seemed to be waiting for someone. Mr. Smith thought to himself, “ Maybe the man is hungry and wants to eat something, but he doesn’t know any English. I’ll try to help him.”
Because Mr. Smith knew only a little Japanese, he had to take out his notebook
and showed the sentence “ I am very hungry” to the Japanese.
To his surprise, the Japanese took a look at it and gave him two dollars, and
then left the hotel.

Enjoying a better life at school, with shorter class hours, greater privacy(隐私)and more rights is all you dream of, right?
For students in Shanghai, they are no longer just dreams. This week experts(行
家)and law-makers in Shanghai had a meeting to talk about a new law(法律). It is called the “Shanghai Underage Protection Law(上海未成年人保)”.
The law says students’ diaries and letters are their secrets and “Nobody can read them if they don’t agree.”
Do your teachers sometimes say something bad to you? Maybe they send you

Shanghai students may have less homework because of the law. Class hours may become
shorter for juniors next year, down from 45 minutes to 40 minutes in some schools.
The law also talks about students’ health. According to the rules,“Smoking in
these places full of kids is not allowed.”That means you can ask your teacher to
stop if he smokes in a classroom.
The law makes schools safer for students. “No dancing halls, Internet bars or computer game
bars are allowed within(在……以内)200 meters of a school gate.” the law says. The law is great, right? Many students like it.
“My mom reads my diaries sometimes. I think she will be afraid if I tell her she is doing
something against the law.” said Luo Jia, 13, at Shanghai Fuxing Junior School.
If you want to know more about the law, go to “www.spcsc.sh.cn”.

Butts couldn’t sell his game, but then in 1948 James Brunot improved the rules and the design of the game, and gave it a new name. Scrabble, whose name became a brand(商标) name in 1948,is now one of the most popular games in the world.

I asked loudly, “Why did you cut all the heads off?” The seller was also very annoyed(颇为生气的)and said, “Didn’t you tell me to go ahead again and again?” On hearing what he said I felt funny as well as angry. For 99% of human history, people took their food from the world around them. They ate all that they could find, and then moved on. Then around 10,000 years ago, about 1% of human history, people learned to farm the land.
The kind of food we eat depends on which part of the world we live in, or which part of our country we live in. For example, in the south of China they eat rice, but in the north they eat noodles. In European countries near the sea, people eat a lot of fish. In central Europe, away from the sea, people don’t eat so much fish, but they eat more meat. For example, in Germany and Poland, there are hundreds of different kinds of sausages.
In North America, Australia, and Europe, people eat with knives and forks. In China, people eat with chopsticks. In parts of India and the Middle East, people use their fingers to pick up food.
Nowadays it is possible to transport food easily from one part of the world to another. We can eat whatever we like, at any time of the year. In Britain, bananas come from Africa; rice comes from India or the U.S.A.; strawberries come from Chile or Spain. Food is a very big business. But people in poor countries are still hungry while people in rich countries eat too much.

Once a circle lost a piece of its own. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around looking for its missing piece. But because it was not complete, it could only roll(滚动)very slowly. It enjoyed the flowers and the sunshine along the way. It talked with worms. It found lots of different pieces, but none of them fit. So it left them all by the side of the road and kept on looking for the missing piece. Then one day the circle found a piece that fit perfectly(完美).The circle put the missing piece into itself. It could be whole with nothing missing. It was so happy and began to roll. As it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, too fast to see flowers or talk to worms. It realized how different the world was when it rolled so quickly. It felt so sad that it stopped, left its found piece by the side of the road and rolled away slowly.
Sometimes we are perfect when we lose something. A man who has everything is a poor man in some ways. He will never have hopes, dreams or something better. He will never know someone is loving him or someone is giving him something he has always wanted or never had.
We couldn’t be perfect, but we must be brave enough to love, strong enough to forgive, kind enough to share happiness with others and clever enough to know there is enough love around us and then we can always live a wonderful time in our lives.

A. spent much time talking to worms B. wanted to enjoy the sunshine

A. nobody loves us if we give nothing

C. losing something may not be a bad thing sometimes

Orlando,Florida— Is it hard for you to get up early and get ready for classes? Some students at Winter Park High School can quickly get up just in their clothes for sleeping and go to class in their own bedrooms. Of course, their teachers and classmates do not see them because all their class work is on the computer.
This school, the state’ s only online school, has 250 students who are taking classes at home by computer.
“I feel a lot more comfortable at home,” says Luke Levesque, a 16-year-old student who is taking a computer class online. He thinks the school’s computer lad is so noisy that he can’t study well. “Home is much better,” he says.
When a student is ready to begin a class, he or she turns on the computer, reads the teacher’s instructions (指示),and begins working on the lessons for the day. What happens if a student has a question for the teacher? Or the teacher wants to say something about the work a student is doing? The student and the teacher can talk to each other every day through e-mail or by telephone. For example, when Luke opened his daily e-mail from the teacher, it contained(包含)her instructions for the day’s computer lesson. When he finished, he sent his work back by e-mail to her for correcting.
Is it easy for students to cheat on tests when they’re working at home? The teachers have already thought about this. They make students take their final exams in person in the classroom.
If this first online program goes well, in three years Florida’s high school students will be able to take all their classes by computer. When that happens, students will be able to get their high school diplomas(文凭)without having to set foot in a classroom.
( )70. Winter Park High School is___________.
A. one of the online schools in Florida B. an ordinary high school in Florida
C. in fact Luke Levesque’s own bedroom D. the only online school in Florida
( )71. Luke likes taking classes at home because___________.
A. he feels more comfortable at home B. hisschool has not enough computers
C. he can learn what he likes at home D. he doesn’t need to face his teachers
( )72. Students can talk to each other and to the teacher____________.
A. face to face B. through e-mail or by telephone
C. only by telephone D. only through e-mail
( )73. What can we know from the passage?
A. In three years, all the school students in Florida can take their lessons by computer.
B. All the Florida’s high school students can get their diplomas without going to their classrooms.
C. Computers and the Internet will be used more and more widely in school.
D. No students will have to attend school.

In America, when people say“man’s best friend”, they don’t mean another person. Instead, they are talking about a lovely animal:a dog! These words show the friendship between people and animals. Dogs and other pets can give happiness to people’s life. ①Some people think of their pets as their children. A few even leave all their money to their pets when they die!
Animals can help people, too. ②People can teach dogs to become the“eyes”for a blind person or“ears”for a deaf person. Because of that, animals are brought into hospitals for“visits.”
Americans hold“Be kind to Animals Week”the fist week of May. Pet shows are held during the week. Even if you don’t live in America, you, too, can do this. How? First, think about how animals make your life richer. If you have a pet, take more time this week to play with it. Remember to give it delicious food. Also, be sure to keep your pet from those unwanted babies.
If you don’t have a pet, be kind to animals around you. For example, if you see a street dog, don’t kick it or throw things at it. Instead, just leave it alone, or better yet, make friends with it. If others around you do bad things to an animal, try to stop them. ③As people, we must protect animals who can’t speak for themselves.
74.根据①处完成下面的句子(每空一词)
Some people ________________ their pets ________________ their children.
75.根据②处完成下面的句子(每空一词)
Dogs can ________ ________ to become the“eyes”for a blind person or“ears”for a deaf person.
