The Life of a Guide Dog
Guide dog’s first year: We train some dogs as guide dogs, and they will
meet their dog walkers at 6 to 8 weeks old. If they want to become good
guide dogs, they must not only have the right parents; they must also be
brought up properly. At 6-8 weeks old, the dogs have their first taste of guide
dog training. Volunteer dog walkers introduce the young dogs to the sights,
sounds and smells of a world. This will mean taking the dogs on buses and
trains, into shops and along busy streets. The dog walker will also teach the
dog to walk ahead on the leash(皮带), and to follow simple orders such as
“ sit down”, “stay” and “come”. When the dog is about a year old, it returns
to guide dog schools for the next part of its important training.

pavement(人行道); Not to turn corners unless the owner tells him to do so;

turn left or right; How to deal with traffic. Guide dogs in training wear
brown training harnesses(绳套)——they don’t get a smart white one until
they finish their schooling.
Out to work: When they walk out, the guide dog and owner face new
challenges(挑战). When crossing roads, the owner and dog really become a
team. The dog waits for the owner to decide when it is safe to cross and give
the order “forward”. Their owner’s safety depends on the dog’s
concentration(专心). If you see a guide dog working, please don’t give him
any food or talk to him.
