My almost 6-year-old son is currently crazy about Star Wars and Harry Potter. I know he’s young, but the movies and books bring up topics for us to sort through all the time — tough topics. The nurse was probably exhausted from taking sick calls and maybe she simply needed a coffee break. I do know that those people were not on their best behavior or showing their best side but how many of us have been in those exact shoes? We all act in haste. We all speak in haste. We all do things we regret. And, if we were lucky, we were met with kindness instead of anger in return for our outburst.

Bioluminescence (生物发光) is a natural phenomenon wherein a chemical reaction within an organism’s body produces light. It can be found in many places in nature — fireflies, some mushrooms — but mostly in the deep sea.
Recently, Rambouillet, a small historic French town, has teamed up with a company called Glowee to turn the city into a full-scale bioluminescence laboratory. The goal is to change the way in which cities use light. The company uses marine (海的) bacteria harvested from the coast of France. It makes some of the town’s public light up in the cool blue of bioluminescence.
These bioluminescent bacteria are stored in a seawater filled tube, giving the bacteria room to float around and light up. The light provided by the bacteria is part of their natural metabolism, so producing the light requires no energy other than that which is needed to feed the organisms. This makes it much more environmentally friendly and sustainable than electric light, which consumes a huge amount of non-renewable energy.
“On the way to lighting up the world with bioluminescence, you have to feed the bacteria and add water as they grow. That’s not so easy. The phenomenon will be very temperature-dependent and I doubt that it will work in the winter. Also, bioluminescence is not very bright compared to electrical lighting, though they have improved the light intensity,” Carl Johnson, a professor from Vanderbilt University said.
One potential solution to these issues — and one that Glowee is looking into — is to remove the biological aspect of the whole process. Theoretically, luciferase (荧光素酶) can be removed from the bacteria and used to create light instead of the bacteria itself. Because luciferase is non-living, it doesn’t need to be fed. Creating new means of sustainable lighting is a way of being environmentally friendly without plunging the earth back into darkness.

For nearly three decades, we have waited anxiously for an effective drug that could defeat Alzheimer’s disease. We believed we had identified the root cause behind this condition: sticky clumps of the protein beta- amyloid (β淀粉样蛋白) in the brain. Even as drug after drug on this target failed to make a difference to symptoms, we continued to pour more money into the effort.
Regrettably, it is now becoming clear that this time could have been better spent zooming out (相机镜头变焦以使景物缩小) from beta-amyloid, to look at the big picture of possible Alzheimer’s causes.
Doing so reveals a far more complicated and dangerous illness. It seems to be a condition that doesn’t have a lone underlying trigger, but instead results from multiple processes and risk factors.
By thinking of Alzheimer’s in the same way as we do various conditions like heart disease, researchers are now combining knowledge from across disciplines (学科) to identify, and tackle, the many known risk factors.
This new approach comes not a moment too soon, because 10 million new cases of dementia (痴呆) are diagnosed globally each year. The vast majority of these, between 60 and 70 per cent, are Alzheimer’s disease. As people are living longer than ever, the number of people living with dementia is predicted to almost double every 20 years.
Accepting that Alzheimer’s is more complicated than we thought might seem discouraging. And yet, targeting the many factors in the disease, including the role of infections, diet, sleep habits and inflammation (发炎), puts some control back in our own hands, because these are things we can all do something about. It means we don’t have to simply wait for drug companies to deliver: we can also cut our own chances of getting dementia.
Tunnel vision has held us back for too long. With this new approach, a single effective drug might well be out of the picture, but instead, there is a real possibility that we could break down Alzheimer’s by a thousand tiny cuts.
