Unit2 These are my parents.
Good morning, Ladies and Gentlemen. It’s my great pleasure to be here sharing my lesson with you. I prepare to say the lesson from five parts.
Part 1: Analysis of the Teaching Material
. Topic introduction
My lesson today is Module 2 Unit2 “These are my parents.” The content of this unit is “how to introduce parents, including their jobs, workplaces and so on.” By studying this unit, the students know how to ask and introduce others’ jobs. We know that language is for communication. And the study of this lesson will help the Ss with daily communication.
. Analysis of the students
The students have just entered junior high school for about two months. Their vocabulary and language knowledge are very poor, but they have a great interest in English now.
. Teaching objectives
According to English syllabus and the new English Curricula Standards, I put forward the teaching objectives as follow.
1.Knowledge objectives:
a) The Ss can hear, read, and use the key words and sentence patterns.
b) The Ss can understand and read the passage of this lesson.
2.Ability objectives:
a) The Ss can understand the introduction of jobs.
b) The Ss can process information of jobs in reading.
c) To develop the students’ abilities of speaking, reading and writing about introducing jobs.
3.Emotion objectives:
a) By completing the task, the Ss increase their interest and set up self-confidence in language study;
b) Teach the Ss to respect and love their parents in spite of their jobs, put the moral education in the language study.
. Teaching keys and difficult points
The key points of this lesson are the key words about jobs and workplaces, such as factory, hotel, university, hospital, office, doctor, worker, manager, secretary, and the key sentence patterns such as “ What are your parents’ jobs?” “What’s your father’s job?” “These are my parents.” “This is my father.” and “ My mother is a doctor at the hospital.”
The difficult point is to ask the Ss to introduce people’s jobs and workplaces in one sentence, such as “My mother is a doctor at the hospital.”
Well, the proper teaching aids such as multi-media and the proper teaching methods can help the teachers to achieve the teaching objectives better, to stress the key points and break through the difficult points.
. Teaching aids: pictures, real objects, multi-media, tape recorder
Part 2 Teaching Methods:
The following are the teaching methods I chose.
a) Five step method. It makes the Ss the real masters in class while the teacher himself acts as the director.
b) Direct Method. This method helps the students grasp the new words without translating English into Chinese in their mind. Thus, they will form the habit of thinking in English gradually.
c) Communicative teaching method. It encourages the students to use English to communicate with others, thus improve their spoken English and communication ability.
d) Task-based teaching method. It offers the Ss an opportunity to use language to complete specific tasks.
Part 3 Studying Methods:
a)Encourage the students to communicate in English bravely in a relaxed and agreeable atmosphere.
b) Help the students understand the new knowledge through seeing, hearing, saying, observing, imagining , thinking etc.
Part 4 Teaching Process:
I divide the teaching process into five steps.
Step1 Warm-up and review:
I will play a short cartoon movie for the students to listen and sing the song: I can hear the bell.
The students in Grade Seven are still children. Singing a song can make them feel pleased and satisfied, and can arouse exciting motion. And in this song, we can review the sentence pattern “ I can ……”. Then the teacher asks, “Can you sing?” “Can Liu Huan sing?” “Yes, he can sing. He is a singer.” Thus lead to the new lesson.
Step2 Presentation and practice.
1. Present the new words about jobs and workplaces by using real objects and pictures.
2. I point to the pictures and the words, and say sentences like this first: “She is a doctor.” “She is at the hospital.” “She is a doctor at the hospital.” Then help students to say similar sentences.
3. Play the Lucky 52 game.
Ask some students to come to the front of the classroom one by one. One student does actions, and the others guess the jobs and say sentences.
4. Have a competition.
First I say, “My mother is a nurse. My father is a worker. I love them very much.” Then ask several students, “What are your parents’ jobs?” After that, divide the students into some groups, then have them work in lines. Student A asks B, “What are your parents’ jobs?” B answers and then asks C the same questions. Thus, see which group first finishes asking and answering, and this group is the winner.
By this step, it achieved the teaching aim of mastering the key words and sentence patterns and respecting their parents.
Step 3 Consolidation
1. I say, “We will have 4 new classmates. They are Betty, Tony, Li Daming and Wang Lingling. What are their parents’ jobs? I only know one of the mothers is a secretary and one of the fathers is a factory manager. Please read the passage in 4 and find out whose mother is the secretary and whose father is the factory manager?” Give the students 1 minute to skim the passage and find the answers. Check the answers with the class. Then ask the students to read the passage again and complete the table in 5 according to the passage.
2. Students read the passage after the tape. Pay attention to the sentences like “These are my parents.” “This is my father.” “My mother is an English teacher in a university in Beijing.” Have the students practice reading for several times to consolidate the sentence patterns.
By this step, it achieved the teaching aim of understanding, reading the passage and processing information of jobs in reading.
Step 4 Project
1. Sum up.
Key words: factory, hotel, university, hospital, office, doctor, worker, manager, secretary, singer, teacher
Key sentence patterns: What is your father’ job? (/What are your parents’ jobs?)
My father is a teacher (at Beijing International School).
Here, to help the students master the usage of the capital letters and the full stop, I’ll underline them and give short explanation.
2. Make a survey.
Students work in groups of 4 to complete the table.
| What’s your father’s name? | |||
| What is your father’s job? | |||
| Can he speak English? | |||
| Can he play basketball? | |||
| Is your mother a teacher? |
3. Homework.
a) Ask the students to write sentences in 6 with full stops and capital letters.
b) Ask the students to write a short passage to introduce their parents similar to the passage in this unit.
By this step, it achieved the teaching aim of developing the students’ abilities of speaking and writing about introducing jobs.
Part 5 Self-evaluation and predictions
In my design, I follow the demands of the new English Curricular Standards, apply the Communication Approach and Task-based Approach to make the students the active participants in class.
In this lesson, I use PPT and write the difficult points with different color chalk, thus break through the difficult points. And I designed several tasks. By playing the game, having a competition and making a survey, the students will become very interested in speaking and learning English, and in these activities, they can master the knowledge easily.
