Passage 2
When Christopher Columbus landed on the then unnamed Costa Rica in 1502, he saw many Indians wearing gold earrings (耳环). So he thought the land must be rich in gold. He named the place Costa Rica, which means “rich coast” in Spanish.
Though little gold was found, Costa Rica today is indeed rich with coffee and bananas. Coffee is the most important product in Costa Rica and most of it is exported (出口) to other countries like America and Germany. Bananas are the country’s second most important export.
Costa Ricans also grow many other crops such as fruits, corn and beans for their own use. Costa Ricans love colors and their houses are painted in bright colors.
Education is very important to Costa Ricans. Almost every village has a school and education is a must for children between seven and fourteen years of age. Boys and girls go to separate (不同的) schools. Classes begin in March and end in November. The other three months of the year are harvest time and the children have to help their parents to pick coffee beans.

Passage 3
There are many ways to find a job. It can be as easy as walking into a neighborhood store to look at its announcement board (布告栏). Local stores often have areas where people can put small signs telling what kind of service they need or can provide. Such services include caring for children or cleaning houses.
Job searchers can also look in the newspaper. Local newspapers have employment announcements placed by companies seeking workers.
Another popular tool for finding jobs is the Internet. For example, people in four hundred and fifty cities around the world can use the Craigslist Web site to buy objects, meet people or find a job. Craigslist says that it receives two million new job listings each month.
Another useful way to find a job is through a college or university. For example, students at the University of Texas in Austin can go to the Career Exploration Center to get help in finding a job. Of course, looking for a job requires knowing what kind of work you want to do. For example, there is a book called “What Color is Your Parachute?” by Richard Bolles. This book has been helping people choose a career (职业) since it was first published in 1970.
Some experts also help people find jobs. Susan W. Miller owns a company called California Career Services in Los Angeles. She says her company helps people find jobs by first helping them understand their strengths, goals and interests. Then she provides them with methods and resources to help them find the right job.

Passage 4
When my family moved to America in 2010 from a small village in Guangdong, China, we brought with us not only our luggage, but also our village rules, customs and culture. One of the rules is that young people should always respect old people. Unluckily, this rule led to my very first embarrassment (难堪) in the United States.
I had a part-time job as a waiter in a Chinese restaurant. One day, when I was serving food to a middle-aged couple, the wife asked me why the food was served so quickly. I told her that I had made sure they got their food quickly because I always respect old people. As soon as I said that, they showed great displeasure. My manager, who happened to hear what I said, took me aside and gave me a long lecture about how sensitive (敏感的) Americans are and how they dislike the description of being “old”. I then walked back to the table and apologized to the couple. After the couple heard my explanation and realized that the problem was caused by cultural differences, they laughed.
In my village in China, people are proud of being old because old age means having rich knowledge and experience. Young people always respect old people because they can learn from them. However, in the United States, people think “growing old” is a problem since it shows that a person is going to retire or that his health is failing. So many people try to keep themselves from aging by doing exercises or jogging, and some women put on makeup, hoping to look young.
When I told the couple in the restaurant that I respect old people, they got angry because I made them feel they were old. Clearly, I had said something they didn’t want to hear. After that, I changed the way I had been with old people. It is not that I don’t respect them but that I no longer express it the Chinese way.
51. The writer served the couple their food so quickly because _____. 【 】
A. the manager asked him to do so B. he respected old people
C. the couple wanted him to do so D. he wanted more pay
52. When the writer treated the couple as old people, they became _____. 【 】
A. nervous B. sensitive C. unhappy D. excited
53. In the writer’s hometown, _____. 【 】
A. people are proud of being old
B. people dislike being treated as the old
C. many people have been to America
D. old people are interested in doing exercises
54. After this experience, the writer _____. 【 】
A. lost his job in the restaurant B. made friends with the couple
C. no longer respected the old D. learned more about American culture
55. According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE? 【 】
A. The more the writer explained, the angrier the couple got.
B. The writer began to dislike the old after this experience.
C. The manager went to the table and apologized to the couple.
D. Americans and Chinese have different ideas about “being old”.
