1Introduction
Besides the general objectives of the Austrian Journal of Statistics, this should contain general instructions for preparation of manuscripts to be submitted. The L A T E X2file can also be used as a template for the setting up of a text to be submitted in computer readable form.
The essential issue is:Use standard L A T E X2with some specifications defining the format suited for printing in the journal.Graphics should be inserted as PostScriptfiles using the stylefile.Bibliographic references should be given using
in the author-date style.
2Objectives of the Journal
The journal is published approximately quarterly by the Austrian Statistical Society,In-stitut f¨u r Statistik,Wirtschaftsuniversit¨a t Wien,Augasse2-6,A-1090Vienna,Austria.Its general objective is to promote and extend the use of statistical methods in all kind of theoretical and applied disciplines.Special emphasis is on methods and results in official or governmental statistics.
Original papers and review articles will be published in the Austrian Journal of Statis-tics if judged consistently with these general aims. All papers will be refereed.
Special topics sections will appear from time to time. Each section will have as a theme a specialized area of statistical application, theory,or methodology.
Technical notes or problems for considerations under Shorter Communications are also invited.
A special section is reserved for book reviews.
One author of each article obtains20reprints.Members of the Austrian Statistical Society receive a copy of the journal free of charge.Specific exemplars may be purchased from the Society.
Articles will also be made available through the WWW.2.1Statistics:Theory and Applications
The section for theory and methods publishes articles that make original contributions to the foundations, theoretical development, and methodology of statistics and probability. Theory and Methods should be interpreted broadly to include all techniques relevant to statistics and probability. This may include computational and graphical methods as well as more traditional mathematical methods. The research reported should be motivated by a scientific or practical problem and illustrated by application of the proposed methodol-ogy to that problem.Illustration of techniques with real data is especially welcomed and strongly encouraged.
Applications and case studies are published if they present original articles which
show analysis with real data that are statistically innovative as well as scientifically and practically relevant,
or
contribute substantially to a scientificfield through the use of sound statistical meth-ods,
or
present new and useful data, such as a new life table for a segment of the population or a new social or economic indicator,
or
using empirical tests, examine or illustrate for an important application the utility of a valuable statistical technique,
or
evaluate the quality of important data sources.
Note that careful analysis of data of substantive importance may be published even there are no methodological innovations.
2.2Official Statistics
The section for official statistics publishes articles which deal with conceptual methods and computational issues. The differentfields covered include
population and social statistics
economic statistics
price statistics
regional and urban statistics
economic and social statistics
tourism statisticsresearch,development and innovation statistics
environmental statistics including environmental accounting and environmental in-dicators
national accounts including input-output tables and analysis.
Especially welcomed are articles which are concerned with relatively new areas like data secrecy
publication policies(presentation of statistics)
trade-offs between precision and timeliness for official statistics
statistical classification.
Of course, papers treating national as well as international concepts(e.g.EU-statistics) are of interest.
3Layout of the Manuscripts
The Journal is produced on the basis of computer readable manuscripts provided by the authors. Therefore we highly recommend to follow exactly the provided instructions already at the very beginning of the writing of the paper. The present document can be used directly as template.Thefile named may be obtained from the WWW-address
or requested from the editor on a diskette(or by E-mail).(Note that several otherfiles have to accompany.)
3.1Technical Medium
Whenever possible,a submitted manuscript should be provided in electronic form. The preferred medium is E-mail(),3.5”-diskettes in standard DOS are also possible. However,a printed version for control purposes should additionally be provided.
In order to obtain a uniform layout and to ease the production as much as possible it is highly recommended to use L A T E X2for the text processing.Graphics should be added in PostScript-format(use psfig.sty)at suitable places of the manuscript.
It is also possible(although less desirable)to use Word to write the manuscript.Ex-perience shows, however, that the demand on editorial work is much higher. Therefore, we strongly ask for strictly following the instructions, careful setting of mathematical formulas and always specifying the kind of used software for setting the text.
3.2Formal Configuration
The copy of the paper for printing should be on white paper size A4(210x297mm).The printed version will be reduced by the factor of 80%of the original size. Therefore it is strongly recommended to use a font which looks most similar to Times Roman size 12points.The printed text should then be within a frame with 3cm left and right margin and 3.3cm top and bottom margin.
The title should characterize as brief and concise as possible the contents of the paper. Each article must have a summary in English and German which inform the reader quickly on the contents and the substantial results. The length surely depends on the contents, however,it should not exceed 150words.Mathematical formulas should be avoided in the summary.
Headings and footings as well as pagination will be added during the production. Therefore, please enumerate the pages on the back of the sheets using a soft pencil.Foot-notes should be avoided as much as possible.
The article should be structured by enumerated sections and subsections.Graphics and tables must contain captions, above tables and below graphics (figures).Examples are (see Figure 1and Table
