When you listen to your favorite songs, you probably admire the singer or the musicians you're hearing. Those talented musical performers, however, are only some of the people involved in making the music you enjoy. Most people in the music industry work "behind the scenes", but their roles in the music-making process are very important.
Songwriters
Before you can hear a song, a songwriter must imagine it Some songwriters work alone, but many songwriting teams include someone who writes the song’s words, and another person who writes the music. Pop music legend Elton John’s best-known songs, including Tiny Dancer and Your Song, were written to accompany the words of Bernie Taupin, whose name you might not know.
Arrangers
After a song has been written, music arrangers make it more appealing by deciding which instruments will be used, what speed the song will have, and the song’s pitch. A good arrangement can make a song a “classic” that people will remember and want to hear again and again.
Recording Engineers
Recording engineers also play a major role in creating the final sound that you hear. First, they set up the recording studio, the room where the performers play. Next, they use electronic equipment to record the music. Finally, long after the musicians have finished, recording engineers use a mixing board to balance the sounds of each musician, and sometimes to incorporate special sound effects or additional tracks.
Studio Musicians
Many talented singers and musicians aren’t stars, but work in the background as studio musicians. These artists aren’t members of one musical group. Instead, they are hired for recording sessions that eventually become the music you buy, as well as the music used in television shows, movies, and radio ads.
Many people make a living with music. You may not recognize all of their names, but all of them work together to create the songs you love to listen to.

15、Normally, we talk about the spirit of giving , and it is important to do this. But we hardly hear any talk about the spirit of receiving. Very few people know how to receive a gift kindly. Therefore, while we are receiving a gift ,we are actually rejecting it .And we turn off the flow of love by refusing to allow the other person to experience the joy of giving.
A man knew that his wife dreamed of having a fur coat , but he couldn’t afford to buy her such a coat .He loved his wife very much and he wanted to make her happy. Finally, he decided to start a fur-coat-buying project. He saved money in every way that he could .Two years later, he brought her a fur coat --- not one of the most expensive ones, but a nice fur coat. He gave it to his wife on her birthday. When she saw the coat, she said, “Oh , Bill, how could you ?You know how much we need a new sofa . ” Then after a while ,she said ,“But it is nice ,thank you .”But the husband’s feeling were hurt. Two years of love was hurt by her words---she didn’t accept a gift kindly.
Do we often act this way when we receive a gift? Are we sometimes too proud, or too cold? Or are we not strong enough to let the other person do the giving?

16、 Could you live without a TV for one year? What would you do with all that spare time? Philippa Carling wanted to see if it was possible and persuaded(说服)her family to give theirs up for one whole year.

17、How should one invest a sum of money in these clays of inflation (通货膨胀)? Left in a bank it will hardly keep its value, however high the interest rate. Only a brave man, or a very rich one, dares to buy and sell on the Stock Market. Today it seems that one of the best ways to protect your savings, and even increase your wealth is to buy beautiful objects from the past. Here I am going to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks, which I personally consider are among the most interesting of antiques.
I sometimes wonder what a being from another planet might report back about our way of life. "The planet Earth is ruled by a mysterious creature that sits or stands in a room and makes a strange ticking sound. It has a face with twelve black marks and two hands. Men can do nothing without its permission, and it fastens its young round people's wrists so that everywhere men go they are still under its control. This creature is the real master of Earth and men are its slaves(奴隶)."
Whether or not we are slaves of time today depends on our culture and personality, but it is believed that many years ago kings kept special slaves to tell the time. Certain men were very clever at measuring(量) the time of clay according to the beating of their own hearts. They were made to stand in a fixed place and every hour or so would shout tire time. So it seems that the first clocks were human beings.
However, men quickly found more convenient and reliable(可靠的) ways of telling the time. They learned to use the shadows cast by the sun. They marked the hours on candles, used sand in hour- glasses, and invented water-clocks. Indeed, any serious student of antique should spend as much time as possible visiting palaces, stately homes and museums to see some of the finest examples of clocks from the past.
Antique clocks could be very expensive, but one of the joys of collecting clocks is that it is still possible to find quite cheap ones for your own home. After all, if you are going to be ruled by time, why not invest in air antique clock and perhaps make a future profit(收益)?
1.According to the passage, collecting antique clocks____.
A.can hardly keep the value of your savings
B.will cost much of your savings
C.may increase your wealth
D.needs your bravery
2.By quoting (引用) the remark of a being from another planet, the author intends to____.
A.suggest human beings are controlled by a clock
B.describe why clocks can rule the planet Earth
C.tell readers what clocks look like
D.compare chocks to human beings
3.Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a way to measure the time?
A.Counting the beating of one's own heart.
B.Making use of candles, sand and water.
C.Observing shadows cast by the sun.
D.Keeping slaves busy day and night.
4.The underlined phrase stately homes in paragraph(段落)4 means_________.
A.state-owned houses
B.houses in very good condition
C.grand houses open to the public
D.houses where statesmen meet regularly
5.The purpose of the passage is________.
A.to introduce the culture of antique clocks
B.to offer some advice on collecting antique clocks

18、In front of my daughter, Shelly, was a bowl filled with cabbage. She hated cabbage. She only sat there in silence with tears in her eyes.
“Shelly, my dear, why don’t you eat a little? If not, your mum will shout at us.”
Shelly didn’t feel happy. “OK, dad. I will eat, just a little.” Then Shelly said, “Dad, if I eat it all, will you give me what I want?”
“Yes.”
Slowly she began to eat. It took her almost half an hour to finish all the food in the bowl. Then she came up to me and said, “Dad, I want to have my hair cut off!”

I had to keep my promise. Shelly had all her hair cut off. She smiled.
