Have you ever walked into a room and felt relaxed? It could be because the walls
painted blue, a calm and peaceful color.
Sometimes colors can affect (影响) our feelings and moods (情绪). Some colors can
make us feel calm and peaceful. Blue is one of these. Wearing blue clothes or sleeping
in a blue room is good for our mind and body, because this color gives us good feeling.
Blue is also the color of sadness, so you may say "you're feeling blue" when you're
feeling sad. White is another calm color. You should wear white clothes if you're feeling nervous. White is also the color of purity (纯洁). Many women like to be in white on
their wedding (婚礼) days. Green is the color of nature. It can give us more energy whenwe are feeling tired.
Some colors can make you feel warm. These colors can give you a happy feeling.
People who live in cold weather use warm colors in their homes like orange and yellow
instead of white and blue. Orange shows joy. It can bring you success and cheer you up when you are feeling sad. Yellow is the color of the sun, so it can remind you of a
warm, sunny day. Yellow is also the color of wisdom (智慧). Some people prefer this
color when they study for exams. For example, they may use yellow school things. Red
is one of the strong colors. Wearing red often makes us active.

For hundreds of years, scientists have been trying to answer what things have an effect on people’s emotions (情感). How you feel is controlled by many things. Your emotions can be affected by your personality, by the actions of others and by events around you. Perhaps you don’t know your emotions can be influenced by the weather as well.
People often say they feel good when the sun is shining and sad when it is cloudy. In fact, sunlight makes us feel good. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a vitamin. Vitamins are natural chemicals (化学物质) which we all need to stay healthy. Sunlight helps our bodies produce vitamin D. Vitamin D helps our bodies make a special chemical. This special chemical affects our brains (大脑) and makes us feel happy. For example, there are long, dark winters of little sunlight in Sweden and Norway, so many people in these countries often feel sad. Without much sunlight, their bodies produce less vitamin D. Without enough vitamin D, their bodies make less of this special chemical which makes them feel good. To help the people in these countries feel better, special “sunrooms” with artificial (人造的) lights have been built. People can go there and get “sunlight” for an hour or two!
The weather can also affect people’s emotions in other ways. Hot weather can make people angry because people feel uncomfortable when they are hot. In the same way, rain can make people angry because being wet can be unpleasant. As you can see, the weather can have an effect on the chemicals which control our brains. Through these ways, the weather can influence our emotions. Sadly, while the weather can change us, we can hardly change the weather.
46. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a factor (因素) that can affect one’s emotions?
A. Weather. B. Actions of others. C. Personality. D. Age.
47. When sunlight hits our skins, our bodies produce a ___________.
A. vitamin B. energy C. artificial chemical D. natural chemical
48. Which of the following is true about vitamin D according to the passage?
A. It is a kind of artificial chemical. B. It makes us worried by affecting our brains.
C. It is needed by us all to keep fit. D. It is in the sunlight.
49. What can we infer (推断) from the passage?
A. We feel good when we are in the bright cool weather.
B. We will be happy when we are caught in the rain.
C. All people in Norway and Sweden feel sad in winter.
D. The more vitamin D you have, the happier you’ll be.
50. What may be the best title for this passage?
A. Why Do We Feel Sad? B. The Weather Influences People’s Emotions
C. People Need More Vitamin D. We Can Hardly Change the Weather

April Fool’s Day is supposed to be a day to play jokes on others in hopes of getting a good laugh and making one feel like a fool. However, the April Fool’s Day of 19 was quite different for my mom and me.
That day my friend Jimmy and I were playing a game. I had dropped down from a bar (横木) many times in the past without ever having a problem, but that day the simple act of dropping to the ground became a nightmare (噩梦). I broke my arm.
Jimmy’s dad heard my crying and rushed out to see what was going on. When he saw the problem, he quickly put me into his truck and went inside to telephone my mom and let her know he would take me to the hospital. As that day was April Fool’s Day, Mom was not buying it and really thought all this was a big joke. Mom was finally convinced (确信) by Jimmy’s mom. When she saw me, she broke down in tears because she felt so bad—she originally (起初) thought this was just a big prank(恶作剧).
I guess one could compare this to the story of “The Boy Who Cried Wolf”. Since I had pulled pranks before, it is no wonder that my mom didn’t believe it. I as well as my mom was made to look like a fool that day. We both learned a valuable lesson.
56. What happened to the writer on the April Fool’s Day of 19?
57. Why did Jimmy’s dad phone the writer’s mom?

60. Was the writer a honest person or a dishonest person before?
