I remember my first true introduction to art fondly. It was my second year of university and I was a confused 19-year-old at the time, unsure of what academic path I wanted to pursue. I knew that I had always been fascinated by things that made me question the world around me, and my art history class was the first time I really got to get my feet wet.
My professor, a post-graduate with natty (齐整的) hair, entertained us with her stories of travel and revealed the arts of the world to us, something that had not been touched on since my primary school years. The grand story of time was told in broken Greek sculptures, figures whose amazingly detailed limestone carvings were often missing arms and heads to the brittle ravages (无情的破坏) of time. We explored the patterns of the Medieval era and the early Renaissance religious symbolism of Michelangelo and Botticelli. We analyzed the mustard (芥末黄) and chiaroscuro (明暗对比) glare of the Baroque paintings of Caravaggio and El Greco, and we were amazed by the sandcastle-naturalism of the Spanish architect Gaudi. The history of art has fascinated me ever since.
I never had a talent for art myself, but I always did have a well-grounded appreciation for those who did. In primary school, we explored art through music and painting classes, but once we entered secondary school, art was an elective course and quickly limited to the dustbins of my memory. It was only after that humble art history class that I realized what I had been missing.
I strongly believe that a well-rounded society needs everyone to have an early education in the arts. A healthy society needs all its members to open their eyes—and their minds—so that they can learn what is true and beautiful, just as the famous Greek philosopher Plato said, “The reflection of beauty causes the soul to grow wings”.
4. What’s the meaning of the underlined sentence in the first paragraph?
A. The author got lost in the art history class due to the confusion.
B. The author was starting to figure out the exact academic path
C. The author was starting to learn to appreciate art.
D. The author wet his feet because of carelessness.
5. Why did the author mention the professor?
A. To show his love for Greek sculptures.
B. To show the beginning of his love for art.
C. To tell readers the professor’s love for grand stories.
D. To tell readers what the Renaissance religious symbolism is.
6. What’s author’s attitude towards art education?
A. Ambiguous B. Supportive C. Opposed D. Doubtful
7. What’s the purpose of the passage?
A. To advocate the popularity of art history. B. To propose a change in the education of art history.
C. To urge people to explore more art classes in an early age.
D. To arouse people’s awareness of the importance of early art education.

Given their reputation as solitary creatures that come together only to mate and hibernate(冬眠), the idea of snakes hanging out in groups with their "best friends" may sound a little far-fetched. However, a recent study conducted by researchers from Canada's Wilfrid Laurier University states that the reptiles not only actively seek out socialization with their peers, but are also extremely particular about who they spend time with.
For the study, the team led by Ph. D. student Morgan Skinner and associate professor Dr. Noam Miller, selected 40 non-poisonous garter snakes. Ten were from a single litter purchased from a snake breeder, while the remaining were captured from the wild. After marking each sample with a bit of color to allow for easy identification, the researchers placed ten snakes inside each of the four plastic shelters contained within a tabletop enclosure(围墙).
Skinner photographed each snake group twice a day before removing them from their shelters. After cleaning the areas thoroughly to rid them of any familiar smells, the reptiles were rearranged into different groups and returned to the enclosure. A camera placed over the shelters allowed the scientists to capture the animals' movements every five seconds, 12 hours a day, for a total of eight days.
When Skinner and Miller analyzed the images, they found that regardless of where they were placed, the snakes always found their original " friends", forming groups of three or eight inside the small shelters. " They have experienced social cognition," Miller told National Geographic. " They can tell others apart.
The scientists, who published their findings in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology, are not sure why the snakes seek out friendships. However, they believe the animals would not waste their energy forming bonds unless it were beneficial to them. Miller assumes that the tendency for snake friends to curl up with one another probably helps keep wet and warm in the wild. Being in groups may also help keep predators (猎食者) at bay.
8. What does the underlined word “far- fetched” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. Original. B. Attractive. C. Incredible. D. Reasonable.
9. How do the 10 snakes the researchers bought differ from the others?
A. They are easier to identify. B. They are non-poisonous.
C. They have better cognitive abilities. D. They know each other better.
10. How did the researchers come to the conclusion?
A. By analyzing previous data. B. By studying images of various snakes.
C. By tracking the snakes movements in the wild. D. By comparing the results of the two shots.
11. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Why Snakes Seek Out Friendships B. Snakes Have " Best Friends" Too
C. How Snakes Socialize like Humans D. Snakes Form Groups to Protect Themselves
D
While wingsuits--- unique jumpsuits with fabric sewed between the arms and between the legs ----allow the adventurous to fly in the skies, the pull of gravity makes it impossible to accelerate or fly higher. To push past the limitations, Austrian stuntman (特技人 ) Peter Salzmann teamed up with car manufacturer BMW. The result is an electrified wingsuit, which allows flyers to move up to higher altitudes at speeds of up to 186 miles per hour!
The stuntman first thought of creating the revolutionary design in 2017. “At the time, I was developing suits for base jumping with a friend,” he explains. “One evening after a day of testing, we threw out many ideas about improving performance. One of them was a supporting motor ---an idea I just couldn't shake. I found the idea of being able to jump from the mountain and land in my garden fascinating.”
To help with the process, Salzmann reached out to the experts at BMW. It took the team three years and multiple tests jumps to perfect the design. A modified wingsuit with two 5-inch carbon propellers ( 螺旋桨) was born. Powered by a 50-volt lithium battery, the propellers can be controlled using a switch and even stopped mid -light using the emergency button.
On November 6, 2020, Salzmann, put on his hi-tech suit, leaped from a helicopter from an altitude of 10,000 feet to fly around the Hobe Tauern mountain range in Austria. After flying in perfect formation with two experienced flyers in conventional wingsuits, for a few seconds, Salzmann fired up the electric motors and rocketed forward, effortlessly gliding above the third peak, which is higher than the previous two. But his teammates were forced to fly around the mountain top. The task accomplished, they gently went back to Earth.
It is unclear if Salzmann and BMW plan to make the electrified wingsuits available to the general public. But, one can always hope!
12. What inspired Salzmann to create the wingsuit?
A. The multiple tests with a friend. B. The study of the pull of gravity.
C. The advice from experts at BMW. D. The reflections after flying tests.
13. What is the key to the success of the wingsuit Salzmann invented ?
A. The special material. B. An electric motor.
C. Two carbon propellers. D. An emergency button.
14. Why were Salzmann's teammates forced to fly around the mountain top?
A. Because of their bad skills. B. Because of the bad weather.
C. Because of their wingsuits. D. Because of the needs of the task.
15. What is the author's attitude to the electrified wingsuits?
A. Optimistic. B. Conservative. C. Objective. D. Skeptical.

Learning to Give Praise to Others
Words of praise, when used right, can have powerful positive effects on others. They are free, but they're worth so much to the receiving person. 16 Your members didn't follow you because of salaries but for more altruistic(利他的)reasons. Therefore, it is important that you give them the praise that is due for their efforts.
17 Don't say," You look good today." When you could have said," You look amazing today!" Don't say," Thanks for your effort." Instead say," I'm so thankful for your being on this project; we couldn't have finished it without you!"
Of course, with all that I have mentioned above, be sure that it's coming from your heart. 18 Don't praise if you don't have a hint of appreciation for the person. Trust me, it will show in your eyes and the other party will feel upset. Insincere praise is flattery(恭维);you seek to gain something from saying good things about the other person.
Besides, praising in public is rather important. 19 When you praise a partner in public, you lift him up and his conduct for everyone in the room to see. Look for opportunities where you can publicly celebrate the hard work of certain people and make them feel they are great.
I believe that as you begin using these communication tips and praising people around you, you'll see a change in the atmosphere of your work environment. 20 Eventually, you'll find yourself with a more effective team!
A. So you need to be sincere in praise. B. This is more so in voluntary organizations.
C. People will become happier and smile more.
D. It is much more effective than praise in private.
E. Remember that measured praise is no praise at all.
F. Words aren't always necessary when praising others.
G. The best way to teach kids how to praise others is by being an example.

Cayla Davis, a fourth grader at Widener Partnership Charter School, was dropped off at her grandmother's house by her mom last Monday. The routine has become second nature to Cayla, but last Monday was very different .
Cayla Davis was dropped off at her grandmother Joyce Ann Davis' house, in Chester, Philadelphia, at around 7:00 am. Her mother, Donna Davis, was running late for her job at the Delaware County Courthouse. So she watched her daughter reach the grandmother's front door, and then drove away. Then Cayla knocked several times, but there was no answer. Cayla felt something was wrong. She walked around the house, trying all of the doors and windows, but they were all locked. She also noticed all of the lights were out and could hear the phone ringing nonstop inside --- Donna Davis was calling to make sure her daughter got in all right.
That's when Cayla sprang into action. "She climbed to the top of the door, where there was a glass trellis(棚子), ’’ Donna told ABC News. "I don't know how she did it, but my daughter was able to remove the glass and gained entry to the house. She could have really gotten hurt and was very fortunate. "
Cayla said that she used a chair to support herself, climbed onto the front of the house, and pulled herself through a window above the front door. Finally inside, Cayla went upstairs and found her grandmother shaking from a brain aneurysm(动脉瘤).
CAyla answered her mom's call once inside. "Mom, come back. Please come back, ” Donna said her daughter told her. "I found grandma upstairs in her bedroom and she's shaking.
