I was still a thief when I met Anil. And though only 15,I was an experienced and fairly successful hand.
Anil was about 25-a tall, thin fellow-and he looked easy-going,kind and simple enough for my purpose. I might be able to get into his confidence.
I gave him my most appealing smile. “I want to work for you." I said.
"But I can't pay you.”
Perhaps I had misjudged the man.I asked,“Can you feed me?”
“Can you cook?”
“I can cook.”I lied.
“If you can cook, then I can feed you.”
The meal I cooked that night must have been terrible because Anil gave it to a stray dog and told me to be off.But I just hung around, smiling in my most appealing way, and he couldn't help laughing.
Later,he patted me on the head and said never mind, he'd teach me to cook. He also taught me to write my name and said he would soon teach me to write whole sentences and to add numbers. I was grateful. I knew that once I could write like an educated man there would be no limit to what I could achieve.
One evening he came home with a small bundle of notes, saying he had just sold a book to a publisher. At night,I saw him put the money under the mattress(床垫)。
It's time I did some real work, I told myself. After all, he doesn't even pay me.
·Anil was asleep.I crept up to the bed. Anil was sleeping peacefully. My hand slid under the mattress, searching for the notes. When I found them, I drew them out without a sound. Anil sighed in his sleep and turned on his side, towards me.I was frightened and quickly crawled out of the room.
I began to run, holding the notes by the string of my pajamas (睡衣)。But I slowed down and sat down in the shelter of the clock tower. I should go back to Anil, I told myself, if only to learn to read and write.

I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous.
I awoke late next morning to find that Anil had already made the tea.
I hurried back to the room feeling very nervous. It is much easier to steal something than to return it undetected. I opened the door quietly, then stood in the doorway, in clouded moonlight. Anil was still asleep. I crept to the head of the bed, my hand coming up with the notes. I felt his breath on my hand. I remained still for a minute. Then my hand found the edge of the mattress, and slipped under it with the notes.
I awoke late next morning to find that Anil had already made the tea. He stretched out his hand towards me with a note between his fingers. My heart sank. I thought I had been discovered. “I made some money yesterday,” he explained. “Now you'll be paid regularly.” My spirits rose. “Today we'll start writing sentences.” he said. He knew. But neither his lips nor his eyes showed anything. I smiled at Anil in my most appealing way.

Joel stared at the ground. Rather, he stared at what was lying on the ground:a robotic glove. It was made of metal, with black and yellow paint. Joel looked around his backyard. How did a robotic glove end up next to his dad’s vegetable garden?
In any case, Joel had found it. And no one else was around.
That meant only one thing: finders keepers. Wasn’t that how finders keepers worked? If you found something and couldn’t find the owner, it was yours.
The robotic glove was now Joel’s. Picking up the glove. Joel realized it wasn’t as heavy as he expected it would be. Even though it was much bigger than his own hand, he decided to try it on.
He slipped his hand inside and felt the machine come to life. It beeped(发哔哔声)three times. Joel moved his fingers, and the robot fingers moved too. Joel walked over to a large tree branch that had fallen in his yard and wrapped the robotic fingers around it. He lifted the branch. It should have been heavy, but with the glove it was no heavier than a small branch.
He couldn’t believe it. Maybe it was a kind of antigravity machine reported in the newspaper.
Now, what was he going to do with it?
Joel’s mom was inside rearranging the furniture. He could walk in and say “Do you need a hand with that?” before easily picking up the couch and setting it somewhere else.
At the library, he could say “Let me help” and carry in a tall stack of boxes filled with books. At the park, he could say “How about we cat lunch over there?” and carry the picnic table to a shady spot.
Everything would feel as light as a pencil. He’d feel like a superhero.
But first, he wanted to show his dad what he’d found. He started running toward the front yard. That’s when he heard someone call, “Has anyone seen my robotic glove?” Joel stopped short.
Near the garage, his dad was talking to their new next-door neighbor, Mr. Shore.
“I haven’t seen a robotic glove,” Joel’s dad said.

Joel’s eyes widened when he realized the glove belonged to Mr. Shore.
Just then, Joel's mom called out, “Help me move the couch!”
Joel’s eyes widened when he realized the glove belonged to Mr. Shore. Staring at it, he felt caught in a dilemma, though he knew finders keepers didn’t work if you found the owner. However, seeing the disappointment on Mr. Shore’s face, he took a deep breath and called out, “I found it!” Mr. Shore’s face lit up with relief. Joel ran over, took off the glove, and gave it to his neighbor. “I found it in the backyard,” Joel said. “I tried it on and I could lift a huge branch. It’s amazing.” (81 words)
Just then, Joel’s mom called out, “Help me move the couch!” He hesitated because without the glove, his dreams of being a superhero faded away. He felt so upset. Everyone looked at each other—and then everyone looked at the glove. Mr. Shore held it out to Joel with a giant smile. “Would you like to use it?” “Yes, please.” Joel’s smile was as big as Mr. Shore’s. He slipped on the glove and the couch was as light as a pencil. Joel felt like a superhero again! (77 words)

Rose’s front doorbell rang loudly. She lived alone but she liked company now and again. She didn’t like it if she missed visitors. That happened a lot in the past when her doorbell was too quiet. But everything was fine now, thanks to Mr. Banks, Gus’s dad. He put in a louder doorbell for her, which made all the difference. He was always doing odd jobs for her when she needed help. But now poor Mr. Banks was gone.
It seemed so unfair for a nice man like him to die at forty so young! With a wife and two children to support, too! Poor Mrs. Banks.
Rose opened her door. It was Gus Banks, standing there with a big smile and a bag of potatoes. “Mum sent me with these,” he said. “She said to tell you the jam was lovely. We tried some jam from the farmers’ market but it’s not as good as yours, Rose.”
“That’s nice of her to say so, dear. I’d love to give you some more but I haven’t got any,” Rose said sadly. She could see that Gus was disappointed, though he was trying hard not to show it.
She continued. “But there are always some blackberries growing in the field at this time of year. If you pick some for me, I’ll show you how I make the jam and then you can make it yourself!”
Gus opened his mouth in surprise. “What, me? I can’t make jam! And even if I did, it could never be as good as your jam, Rose!”
Rose laughed and smiled. “Don’t be silly, Gus. I’ll show you. There’s nothing to it once you know how.”
“Really?”
“Yes, love.”
“See you tomorrow, Rose.” said Gus, as he put the potatoes down in Rose’s hallway.

Rose watched Gus run off.
The next day Gus came for his jam-making lesson.
Rose watched Gus run off. It would not be a hard job for kids of his age to pick blackberries. And home-made jams would fetch some money from the farmers’ market. Rose sighed, saying to herself, “If only this would help the poor family!” Walking around her kitchen, Rose got her old bread board and the jars ready. Rose looked in her kitchen cupboard. Thank goodness there was lots of jam sugar for her and Gus tomorrow.
The next day Gus came for his jam-making lesson. Rose told him how to clean and cook the blackberries with sugar before putting them in the jars. Gus was a good student. It was nice to watch Gus taste his product, when he closed his eyes, put the spoon down, smiled and said, “Ah.” “You can make more and sell them if you like.” Rose couldn’t help smiling, seeing the spark in Gus’s eyes.

My parents and I had just driven down the narrow mountain road from Marrakesh with all its sharp bends, and had finally arrived at Merzouga. Before us stretched the unending sand dunes (沙丘) that marked the beginning of the Sahara.
Our vehicle set off, quietly running over the sand and small stones. It wasn’t long before we were surrounded by enormous sand dunes, towering above us on all sides. The wind was blowing grains of sand from the tops of the dunes, the sun was beating down hard and bright, and the sky was a deep shade of blue that I had never seen before. The wild beauty of the desert was about to reveal itself. There was not a plant to be seen. The desert appeared completely empty, which was calming and threatening at the same time.
Eventually, as the last rays of sunlight were falling on the sand, we arrived at our desert camp. Stars were already shining brightly in the darkening sky and it was getting cold with the approach of the night. I grabbed my bag and headed towards the warm campfire. I was starving and rushed to put a steak on the barbecue. We enjoyed two days in the camp with camel riding and campfire parties before we set off for Kenya.
A few days after our departure from the camp, we were very near to our rest camp in the Amboseli National Park. Mount Kilimanjaro, the highest mountain in Africa, rose up over the plains before us. Tall grasses and trees dotted the plains, which were alive with the African wildlife. Giraffes, with their long necks, were pulling leaves from the highest branches. In the distance, elephants were eating grass, ears flapping lazily as they moved slowly over the plains.
The rest camp was in sight. Several huts made from brick settle across a large pool of water. The walls reflected the afternoon sun. My father, against my mother’s advice, decided to drive through the pool of water that stretched across the dirt road.

Then, our car was truly stuck in the mud.
We got out of the car.
Then, our car was truly stuck in the mud. We tried hard to push the car out of the mud, but in vain. We needed two boards long enough to help the wheels move. Luckily, we were not far away from the camp. We called the manager of the camp for help. After a few moments, two local men drove over with necessary equipment and pushed us free. Thankfully, with the local men guiding, we drove on to the parking lot next to our hut.
We got out of the car. We were amazed to find many monkeys jumping up and down in the trees. After carrying our suitcases and boxes of food into the hut, I returned to the car and fetched more possessions. It was then that I noticed a small grey monkey sitting on a tree a few metres away and eating a banana. “So cute,” I thought to myself, until I realized it was my banana that he was eating! What an experience!下载本文
