Scene : A court

The opening subtitle: the trail between the old and the new took place in 1925. Darrow defended john scope, an evolutionist. By contrast, Bryan defended the fundamentalists as Christian.

J: Order in the court! The court is in session now ! Please be seated.

J: Now, defenders can deliver your opening statements. Mr. Darrow first, please.

D: my friend the attorney-general says that john scopes knows what he is here for, i know what he is here for, too.he is here because ignorance and bigotry are rampant, and it is a mighty strong combination.

D (walking): today it is the teachers, and tomorrow the magazines, the books, the newspapers. After a while, it is the setting of man against man and creed against creed until we are marching backwards to the glorious age of the16th century when bigots lighted faggots to burn the men who dared to bring any intelligence and enlightenment and culture to the human mind.

J: Mr. Bryan, your turn please.

B: the christian believes that man came from above. The evolutionist believes that he must have come from below.

B: the bible, is not going to be driven out of this court by experts who come hundreds of miles to testify that they can reconcile evolution, with its ancestors in the jungle, with man made by god in his image and put here for his purpose as part of a divine plan.

D: Mr. Bryan is not the only one who has the right to speak for the bible. There are other people in this country who have given up their whole lives to god and religion.  Mr .Bryan, with passionate spirit and enthusiasm, has given most of his life to politics.

 (Bryan drinks a bit.)

D: there is never a duel with the truth. The truth always wins - and we are not afraid of it. The truth doesn’t need Mr. Bryan. The truth is eternal, immortal and needs no human agency to support it!

J:   We will be in recess for half an hour.  The court will resume in half an hour.  

J: Order in the court! now the session will be continued. Please be seated.

D: your honor , i believe we have the right to interpreted the bible literally concerning the specialty of the case.

J: of course ,you have. Please, Mr. Darrow.

D: we are calling him as an expert on the bible.(point to Bryan) his reputation as an authority on scripture is recognized throughout the world.

( Bryan ‘s suspicious look)

B: yes,and ?

D: it says in Genesis that the evening and the morning were the first day. And it also says that the sun was created on the 4th day. Do you believe it?

B: i believe it without any doubt.

D: How could there have been a morning and an evening without any sun?

(Bryan mop his head in silence)

D: do you believe literally in the story of Eve?

B: of course i do.

D: and you believe that god punished the serpent by condemning snakes for ever after to crawl upon their bellies?

B: I believe that.

D: well, have you any idea how the snake went before that time.

( Bryan looks very angry and embarrassed, waving his fan.)

B: Your honor, i will answers all Mr. Darrow’s questions at once. I want the world to know that this man doesn’t believe in god is using a Tennessee court to cast slurs on him.

D: I object to that statement. I am examining you on your fool ideas that no intelligent christian on earth believes.

J: Order in the court! The court is in recess. the court will resume tomorrow.

(Bryan stands alone, desperately)

The ending subtitle: the verdict was guilty but john scopes was only fined 100 dollars and costs. This conviction was definitely a victory for modernists over fundamentalists.下载本文
