A giant tortoise (乌龟) named Diego has returned to his home island (岛屿) Hood Island after becoming the father of more than 800 tortoises. Diego helped raise the number of the island tortoises from 15 to almost 2, 000.
Giant tortoises can live for more than 100 years. They have large bodies and long necks. Hood Island tortoises are smaller than most other giant tortoises, but they’re still large. Over long periods of time, the tortoises have slowly changed their body styles to better fit the environment (环境) they live in.
But the number of Hood Island tortoises went down quickly. Long ago, Hood Island was a favourite stopping place for people on the sea, who used giant tortoises as food on their trips.
In 1976, Diego was one of the only 15 Hood Island tortoises, so the Charles Darwin Research Station (CDRS) began a programme (项目) to raise their numbers. Some Hood Island tortoises were brought to a special protected area, where young tortoises could be raised and cared for. At the time, Diego had been living in a zoo in California for about 30 years. When scientists knew he was a Hood Island tortoise, he was returned to take part in the programme.
The programme turned out to be a success. Because there is no longer a need for a special programme for Hood Island tortoises, Diego and14 other tortoises have now returned to Hood Island, where they’ve joined the other tortoises living in the wild.
57. There are about ______ Hood Island tortoises in the world now.
A. 15 B. 800 C. 1, 200 D. 2, 000
58. Why did the number of Hood Island tortoises go down quickly long ago!
A. Because of the long trips. B. Because of the loss of food.
C. Because the sea got warm. D. Because people ate them.
59. Paragraph 4 mainly talks about ______ .

C. why there was a programme about tortoises D. what scientists did to protect Diego

A century ago, there were about 200, 000 orangutans (红毛猩猩) living in Indonesia, but now the number has been cut in half. They are in danger. Why?
People are cutting down the forests where they live, so it’s getting hard for them to find food. Farmers kill many orangutans to stop them from taking food from farms. Now many baby orangutans do not have moms to teach them what they need to know. That’s why an animal organization (组织) called Four Paws built schools for orangutans. The schools take care of baby orangutans until they can take care of themselves in the wild.
Orangutans go to different schools according to their ages and ability. Usually the youngest babies go to the Nursery (育儿所) . People feed them and take care of them all day long. They must wear masks so they don’t make the orangutans sick. When the orangutans turn 2, they go to Baby School. They spend a little time in the forest. They learn how to climb trees, look for food and make nests. When they turn 4 years old, they go to Forest School. They stay in the forest overnight. Now they can do more on their own, without help from people.
After a few years, the orangutans have learned everything they need to know. People take the orangutans into the forest and let them go.
The orangutans will live and grow in the forest. Maybe one day they will have babies. They can teach them everything they learned at orangutan schools.
| Schools for Orangutans | |
| Reason | There are only (61) ______ orangutans left in Indonesia now. They are in danger because it’s not(62) ______ for them to find food in the forests. And farmers (63) ______ many of them when they try to get food from farms. |

In Botswana, there are many wild animals, including predators (食肉动物) like lions and leopards (豹) . They live on meat and they are good at hunting. Sometimes, they catch farmers’ cows for food. For farmers, it’s a bad thing to lose their cows. So what can they do to cut their losses?
In the beginning, they tried to kill predators to protect their cows. As a result, lions and leopards in this area faced much danger.
In fact, killing the predators is not a good way to fix the problem. It is bad for animals in nature (自然) . In order to protect nature, they have to find other ways. Some scientists think of a simple idea. They paint eyes on the back of cows. When predators see the eyes, they may think the cows already see them and they will stop catching the cows. The idea is really helpful and farmers lose fewer cows. In this way, they protect not only farmers’ cows but also wild animals.
Scientists say that the useful idea comes from nature. For example, some fish have eyespots on their body, and these eyespots can protect them from being hunted by other fish. Sometimes, nature can teach us how to fix the problem in nature.
71. Why do predators catch cows in Botswana?

Stop Eating Game
Now, China already has laws to stop people eating game.
Studies show us that eating game can be bad for both nature and humans. It will make wild animals become fewer in nature. And it can spread viruses and it’s not good for our health. This year, the outbreak of COVID-19 makes many people realize the importance of stopping eating game. We must stop eating game not only for protecting wildlife but also for keeping ourselves safe.
As students, we must tell more people to say no to eating game. And if we find any restaurant sells game, we should report it to the government. If everyone takes action, the world will be a much better place. 下载本文
