“Changing out the light bulbs is the easiest thing you can do,” says Kevin Morrow, senior program manager for the National Association of Home Builders’ green building programs.

And if that’s not enough, a little guilt: “If everyone in the world would just switch out one bulb, we would save thousands of tons of carbon from being ejected into the atmosphere,” says Mark Jupiter, co-founder and president of the product division of New World Home.

Dam it 

“The quickest, easiest, biggest money savers in green living are in conservation when it comes to your home,” says Jupiter.

How low can you flow? 

Good news: Low flow no longer means barely getting wet. There are a host of companies offering aerators for faucets and low-flow showerheads that don’t take everything out of the experience. Try Kohler’s 1.75 GPM Water-Conserving Shower Heads, which cost around $100. Or look for the EPA label, Water Sense, on other products. These items will meet EPA recommendations for flow rates.

Water savings can also come from the commode. The Archer toilet by Kohler ($650) features a classic design — unlike other eco-friendly toilets that can look like they belong in airports. And it can save a typical family of four up to 16,500 gallons of water per fixture per year.

Looking for a cheaper way to save water? “One thing we do in our buildings is we found the toilets waste a decent amount of water, so we install a Toilet Tummy,” says Kinne Yon, co-owner of Kenbar Management, which is developing 1510 Lex, a 298-unit green rental building on the Upper East Side.

A Toilet Tummy (available at dwellsmart.com for $5.39) is basically a balloon that goes into your toilet tank, displacing an amount of water of your choice and thus saving on every flush.

Paint it white 

Follow Mayor Bloomberg’s lead, set with “NYC Cool Roofs,” and paint your roof white. According to the city, a “cool” roof can reduce roof temperatures by 60 degrees and indoor temperatures by 10 to 20 degrees, lessening the need for air conditioning in the summer and lowering the city’s “heat island” effect. The city estimates that a cool roof can reduce AC costs by 50 percent for a one-story building, 25 percent for a two-story building and 10 percent for a five-story building.

Breathe easy 

From the smog that comes in through our windows to the fumes from the chemicals we keep under the sink (you should be getting rid of those, too, by the way), our air is filled with stuff we don’t want in our lungs.

“If you own your air conditioner [central or window] or your furnace, you own the ability to change out your filtration system,” says Morrow.

He also recommends purchasing a HEPA air purifier. The Alen Paralda HEPA Air Purifier ($499 at Green Depot) has a filter that lasts six to nine months, with replacement filters priced at $49.95.

Get smart 

Once the city is outfitted with Smart Meters, a Con Ed device that monitors home energy use and is currently being tested in Queens, then we can all invest in an EnergyHub (energyhub.net).

An EnergyHub looks like an iPhone, goes on your countertop and tells you where and when you’re using the most electricity in your home. And then it helps you regulate your usage — by allowing you to program your thermostat remotely or cutting power to your machines when you’re not around. Though the price isn’t fixed yet, Seth Frader-Thompson, president of EnergyHub, expects it to come in somewhere between $200 and $300, which should pay for itself after about a year.

EnergyHub is in trial homes right now. Frader-Thompson hopes to release the product widely early next year. 

In the meantime, there’s the Kill A Watt Electricity Monitoring Power Strip ($99.95 at greendepot.com), which assesses how much energy your electronics consume. 

“People are starting to pay a lot more attention to ‘phantom’ loads, energy that’s used by appliances even when they aren’t on,” says green-building consultant Maureen Mahle.

Materials, girl 

Switching out functional furniture or materials just to add green touches to your home is not eco-friendly.

“You might have a countertop that’s already in place; if so, you should use it throughout its usable life,” says Morrow.
