You should always support your kids and their natural talents (天赋). And if you do this, great things will happen.

That’s what 9-year-old Joe Whale’s parents thought when they encouraged their son to keep drawing, even though he got into trouble for doodling during class.

They sent Joe to an after-school art class and his artistic abilities were quickly noticed by those around him. In fact, Joe was invited to decorate the dining room of the “Number 4” restaurant in Shrewsbury, Englan d.

Now, Joe is known as The Doodle Boy and has his own website, as well as social media pages showing off his awesome art. We spoke to Joe’s dad Greg about his son’s artistic talents. According to Greg, his son has always loved drawing and was a gifted artist in primary school at age 4.

Also, Greg had some advice for parents who want to encourage their kids to develop their talents: “I would advise parents to encourage their children to always follow their passion and dreams and research local workshops or groupswithin their local community.” He said, “When their kids get into trouble for something at school, some parents tend to shut that behavior down. However, others know how to recognize a talent that needs creative space to grow, so they give them what they need.”

Joe’s teacher recognized his talent and posted his work on Instagram. His drawings caught the eye of the restaurant which asked him to come over and decorate their walls with his doodles. Now, his dad drives him there so he can draw his heart out. Who knew that drawing in an after-class program would lead Joe to get his first job at barely 9 years old? “They wanted to get Joe into their restaurant to complete an art piece in their main din ing area, so we have been going there after school for a couple of hours a night and he gets a chance to put his creativity on their wall,” Greg said.

According to the website, Self-Sufficient Kids, it’s incredibly important to support whatever talents, goals, dreams, and desires your children might have; even if what they excel at doesn’t match your vision of their future.

48.What did the restaurant ask Joe to do?

A. To try some new dishes.

B. To set up a website for them.

C. To draw in an after-class program.

D. To decorate their walls with his doodles.

49.Wh at does the underlined phrase “draw his heart out” probably means?

Be an Ad Detective (侦探)Every day we see advertisements – on TV, in magazines, on websites, in the street and on our computer screens. We hear them, too. But often we don’t notice them. A famous film producer once showed over one hundred products in his film, but most people didn’t notice them!

Are you an ad detective? Can you understand the messages advertisers send you? To be an ad detective, it is useful to know how advertisements work. Let’s look at some typical advertising techniques (技巧).

Group pressure: An advertisement shows lots of young people, each with their own mobile phone. Message: Everyone has got a mobile phone. You need one, too!

Association: Everyone looks happy and healthy in the advertisement. They’re cool and beautiful, too. Message: If you buy the product, you will be happy and cool like these people.

Testimonials: A famous athlete says he or she wears a certain brand of trainers. Message: You’ll be good at sports if you buy these trainers. Or, because a famous athlete wears these trainers, they’re a product you can trust.

Repetition: These advertisements mention the product lots of times and say wonderful things about it. Message: You need to remember the product.

Time pressure: These advertisements use expressions like ‘Buy now! Half price this week.’ Message: You should buy the product quickly before you miss a great opportunity.

Advertisements are interesting, but you can make better decisions about what to buy when you know these techniques! Try these tips: read product reviews, compare products, test products in the shop and, if you are not sure, wait 24 hours before buying something. You may decide that you don’t really need or want it after all!

51.Is it useful to know how advertisements work?

52.How many advertising techniques are there in the passage?

53.What message do happy and healthy looks in an Ad send?

54.What technique is it to mention a product seven times in an Ad?

“What is your earliest memory?” For most people, the earliest memories are reported as taking place at around the age of three or four. Catriona Morrison, a professor of the University of Bradford believes that memories first appear when we are able to start telling stories about our lives. In other words, they’re connected t o storytelling and language.

Studying a person’s earliest memory is a difficult thing to do. For one thing, it can be quite difficult to get someone to remember his/her earliest memory. For another, studying these kinds of memories requires a researcher to place a lot of trust in the person trying to remember. I tested this out by asking workers in the NS office about their earliest memories. Indra, our digital sub-editor, says she thinks she remembers her mum shouting: “Nikki! Nikki! Diana’s dead!” Indra w as two and a half years old when Princess Diana died.

For those, like me, who are unable to think of a certain earliest memory off the top of their heads, Morrison says she tries to make the task easier by asking people to describe their first holiday or Christmas and how emotional the memory is for them. Following this, she will then ask them about their earliest memory.

But which memories do we keep, and which do we lose? Morrison tells me that our early memories are usually connected with some sort of emotion: good or bad. Dr. Tim Wildschut, a professor of psychology at the University of Southampton, describes a study that he is working on now, in which he asks people to keep a diary and to score each event on a number of dimensions (方面). For example: how meaningful was that event? How much did it make you feel connected? Did it raise your self-confidence? One year later, he will ask the subjects how nostalgic (怀旧的) they feel when thinking about those events. With the results, Wildschut hopes to gain a model for understanding which types of memories we keep, which ones we feel nostalgia for, and which are simply lost.

Morrison, however, notes an interesting thing in our childhood memories. Recent studies have shown that up until around the age of seven, children seem to be able to remember very early events in their lives. However, after that age, those memories are somehow lost.

Nostalgia is a difficult feeling to describe, but it’s actually very important. Nostalgia is needed in order to get a sense

of self. Like any memory about life, it can come into the mind through a photo, a certain smell, or a piece of music. Interestingly, studies show that music is not usually present in our earliest memories, but forms a key part of later memories. Truly, in considering how we form memories, it is clear that who we are is very important regarding what we remember.

1. Indra’s story shows that ______.

A. people have similar earliest memories

B. our first memory began at a certain age

C. it is impossible to trust our earliest memories

D. it’s difficult to study people’s earliest memories

2. Morrison asks people to describe their first holiday to ______.

A. check if we can trust our earliest memoriesB. see which memories we would like to keep

C. find out what people’s earliest memories are

D. test how we feel about our earliest memories

3. What is Dr. Tim Wildschut’s study about?

A. The meaning of childhood.

B. Different types of memories.

C. Memories and self-confidence.

D. The importance of keeping a diary.

4. Which might be the best title for the passage?

A. Who decides our earliest memories?

B. Are childhood memories meaningful?

C. When do children begin to have good memories?

D. Do we remember our earliest memories?
